Christian tradition ranks angels in nine orders, also called choirs, set out in a book of the 5th or 6th century. Each has a name here, from First Choir Seraphim to Ninth Choir Angels. Seraph comes from a Hebrew word for burning, and angel from the Greek for messenger.
