Round Robin Generator for 2 to 24 Teams or Players: how it works
This round robin generator turns 2 to 24 names, teams or players, into a chart where every pair meets exactly once. It opens on four sample teams: 3 rounds, 6 games, two courts, 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Press Change beside that summary, type your own names, then choose the courts, the first start and the minutes per match. The list at the foot of the page counts every size.
How the draw works, and how to seed it
Pairings come from the circle method: put the teams in two facing rows, keep the first seat still and shift the rest one seat after each round. Random draw shuffles the names into the seats. To seed the chart, untick Random draw under Change, press Make schedule, and typed order takes over: at every size, line 1 meets line 2 in the final round. Put your two strongest there and the last round is the decider.
Courts decide how long the day runs
A round holds half the field, so 12 teams play 6 games at a time. Rounds never overlap, so a court only helps when it cuts the slots a round needs: eight teams need 28 slots on one court, 14 on two, still 14 on three and 7 on four. Slots times Minutes per match is the day: 14 slots of 25 minutes is 5 hours 50. Left on the opening settings, any field of 7 or more runs past midnight. Add a court, cut the minutes or start earlier.
When one pool is too many games
Games pile up fast: 11 teams play 55, 13 play 78, 16 play 120. Split the field and run the generator once per pool. Print or copy each pool before typing the next: the page keeps one list. Sixteen teams as four pools of four is 24 games, and the top two from each pool fill an 8 team bracket. Pools of 6 and 5 for 11 teams both take five rounds, so they share a timetable; pools of 7 and 6 for 13 do not. The list at the foot of the page splits every size from 6 to 24.
Tips
- Need a blank round robin template? Press Change, type Team 1, Team 2 and so on, untick Random draw, press Make schedule, then Print.
- Print leaves an empty Score box beside every game, and Print results grid gives a blank grid with W, D, L and Pts columns. For a file, choose Save as PDF in the print window.
- Share link writes your names, courts and times into the address, so send it only to people who should see the names. Your own list is kept in this browser and offered back next visit.
- Set Show only to one team and Copy takes just that team's games and byes, as plain text: in a spreadsheet each game lands in one cell.
- Double, under Change, plays every pairing twice, sides reversed the second time: the four sample teams go from 6 games to 12 and finish at 8:30 pm instead of 7:00.
Questions and answers
How many games are in a round robin of any size?
Take the number of teams, times one less, and halve it: 7 teams play 21 games, 9 play 36, 24 play 276. An even field plays one round less than it has teams; an odd field plays a round per team, since somebody sits out each time.
Who gets the bye, and when?
With Random draw ticked, chance decides. Untick Random draw, press Make schedule, and typed order decides: at every odd size, line 1 rests in round 1 and line 3 rests last. Each team sits out exactly once, named in a Bye row at the foot of that round.
How do 4 man round robin wrestling brackets work?
Four wrestlers at one weight make 6 bouts in 3 rounds, one bout each per round. The page opens on that size: press Change, type the four names and set Courts or pitches to your number of mats. The chart will still say Court. Nobody is eliminated, so agree first how level records are split.
Does it work for doubles nights, such as pickleball or euchre?
Yes, when partners stay together. For a round robin euchre tournament, which normally seats four players as two partnerships, type each pair on one line, such as Ana and Raj, and set Courts or pitches to your number of tables. Eight pairs on four tables play 7 rounds. Partners never rotate here, so a mixer needs a different chart.
What if teams finish level?
Settle the rule before anyone plays. The most common tie-breaks are the scores among the tied teams alone, then the scores across the whole event. Head to head fails when three teams beat each other in a circle: A beats B, B beats C, C beats A. The generator keeps no scores or standings.
