Five sets in the menu

Opening and tactic puns is the first set and Piece names the second, with knights, rooks, pawns, bishops, queens and kings. School and scholastic teams and Club and league teams are for a team with a board order. Funny, first tournament is the last.

The tactics in the names

A fork is one piece attacking two or more at once. A skewer attacks a valuable piece so that it must move and expose a lesser one behind it. Zugzwang is being worse off for having to move, and to fianchetto is to develop a bishop on the longest diagonal. A blunder is a critically bad move.

How this list was compiled

A list of 124 chess team names written by Wheel of Teams on 2026-10-02 and filed in five groups. Every name is built on a piece, a tactic, the clock or the board; none uses an opening named after a person, and none names a player, an engine, a website, a federation, a club or a tournament, so any match with a real team is a coincidence. The terms were looked up on 2026-10-02 in Wikipedia's Glossary of chess (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_chess), text under CC BY-SA 4.0. Every name was looked for in Wikipedia's Chess club article and its category of chess clubs, and the list was compared the same day with every other list on this site: no name is repeated. Nothing was checked against a register of clubs or trademarks. Licence: own work
