Emoji Wheel Spinner: Spin One of 150 Emoji: how it works

This emoji wheel spinner holds 150 emoji in nine groups of 24 or fewer. Tap a group and every slice shows the emoji itself. The full wheel of 150 is too fine for that, so it carries numbers and the emoji are listed under it. The card gives the official name, the code point and the year the emoji joined the set.

Pick a group: emoji are filed in odd places

The groups are the ones the Unicode Consortium files emoji under. Its biggest, Smileys and emotion, holds 34 here, so it is two chips: Happy faces and More faces and hearts. The filing can surprise you. Fire and the rainbow sit in Travel and places, under sky and weather. Sparkles and the party popper are Activities. The red heart and hundred points are filed with the faces.

Four games for a group

Emoji story. Switch to Elimination, spin three times and tell one story that uses all three in order. Name that emoji. Spin with the card covered and guess the official name before anyone reads it. Feelings check-in. Spin one of the two faces groups and say when you last felt like that. Pair puzzle. Spin two and find a word, a saying or a film title the pair could stand for.

Tips

  • The official names make a good quiz. ๐Ÿ™ is folded hands, โšก is high voltage, โ˜• is hot beverage and ๐Ÿณ is spouting whale.
  • Group chat game: everyone spins once and has to work that emoji into their next message.
  • Learning a language? Spin, say the word for it, then spin the wheel of languages for the next language to try.

Questions and answers

Which emoji are on the wheel?

150 of the emoji people use most, chosen for this site. In the Unicode Consortium's ranking of emoji by use, built on 2019 data, ๐Ÿ˜‚ face with tears of joy is first and โค๏ธ red heart second. Both are here. The newest is โ™พ๏ธ infinity, from 2018. Flags, skin tones, alcohol, tobacco, weapons and rude gestures are left out.

Why does the same emoji look different on another phone?

The Unicode standard sets only the code point and the name. Each phone and app maker draws its own artwork, so the pictures on this page come from your device. The name and the code on the card are the same everywhere. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Unicode Consortium.

What does the Copy button copy after a spin?

The emoji themselves. Every spin joins the results list under the wheel, and Copy puts that list on your clipboard, one line per spin, with each emoji as a character you can paste into a message.

How this list was compiled: An original selection of 150 widely used emoji made for this site on 2026-09-18, sorted into the eight groups the Unicode Consortium itself uses, with the biggest, Smileys and emotion, shown as two chips since 2026-09-19 so that every group has 24 emoji or fewer and the wheel can draw the emoji on its slices (Happy faces, 14: Unicode's face-smiling, face-affection, face-tongue, face-glasses and face-hat subgroups; More faces and hearts, 20: every other subgroup of Smileys and emotion): 34 smileys and emotion, 16 people and body, 24 animals and nature, 20 food and drink, 20 travel and places, 14 activities, 14 objects, 8 symbols. Each slice shows the emoji character and each card opens with its CLDR short name. Every name, group, subgroup, code point and emoji version was read by script from Unicode's own data file, unicode.org/Public/emoji/latest/emoji-test.txt (Emoji 18.0, file dated 2026-04-30), checked 2026-09-18. The year shown for each emoji is the year Unicode's chart at unicode.org/emoji/charts/emoji-versions.html gives for it, checked 2026-09-18. That chart dates the oldest emoji to 2010 even when the character itself is older: the red heart, U+2764, has been a Unicode character since version 1.1 of June 1993 (unicode.org/Public/UCD/latest/ucd/DerivedAge.txt, checked 2026-09-18). The selection leans on the Unicode Consortium's published ranking of emoji by how often they are used (home.unicode.org/emoji/emoji-frequency, 2019 data, checked 2026-09-18): 149 of the 150 appear in that ranking and 136 of them sit inside its first 500 places. The newest emoji on the wheel joined the set in 2018 and 112 of the 150 date from 2010, so older phones and laptops can draw every one. Left out on purpose: country flags, skin tone and hair variants, keycaps, alcohol, tobacco, medicine, weapons and rude gestures. Emoji artwork differs between phone makers, so the picture you see is drawn by your own device.
