        How it works

        This golf club wheel spin holds 20 clubs: four woods, three hybrids, seven irons, four wedges, a chipper and a putter. Spin before a shot and hit whatever it lands on. That is the random club game, and it turns a practice round into a lesson in half swings and odd lies. The card gives each club's usual loft and job.

        How a random club round works

        Agree the rules on the first tee. The usual version: spin before every full shot, play the club the wheel names, and putt with your own putter. The harder version spins once per hole, and that club plays the whole hole, putts included. Landed on a club you do not carry? Spin again. In Elimination a club leaves the wheel once it comes up, so nothing repeats.

        The Rules of Golf cap a bag at 14 clubs, and there are 20 here, so nobody carries them all.         Questions and answers

        How many golf clubs can I carry in a round?

        Fourteen. Rule 4.1b caps a player at 14 clubs, both at the start of a round and during it. That is a maximum, not a minimum: you can start with fewer and add clubs up to the limit. In stroke play the penalty is two strokes for each hole where the breach happened, four at most. Checked at randa.org on 2026-09-18.

        What is a one-club challenge?

        A round played with a single club, putts included. A mid iron is a sound pick, because it can be hooded to run the ball and opened to lift it. Let the Irons group choose, then leave the other 13 in the car. For a three-club round, switch to Elimination and spin three times.

        Are the lofts on the cards exact?

        No. They are typical figures from Wikipedia's golf club articles, checked on 2026-09-18. No numbered club has a standard loft, and every maker sets its own. Irons have also grown stronger: a modern 9-iron has about the loft of a 7-iron from the 1990s.

        Wedges, chipper and putter 6

        • Chipper Feels like a putter but has a more lofted face, so it counts as an iron. A two-faced chipper is not legal.
        • Gap wedge Centered on 52 degrees, between the pitching and sand wedges. Also sold as an approach, attack or utility wedge.
        • Lob wedge Around 60 degrees, usually the highest loft in the bag. Short-game coach Dave Pelz proposed it in the 1980s.
        • P-wedge The pitching wedge. Around 45 to 48 degrees today, down from 50 to 52 in older sets. Once sold as a 10-iron.
        • Putter Loft is typically 5 to 6 degrees and cannot be more than 10. The one club almost no golfer goes without.
        • Sand wedge About 56 degrees with about 10 degrees of bounce. Gene Sarazen built his prototype in 1931 and won the 1932 British Open with it in the bag.

        Woods and hybrids 7

        • 3-hybrid Part wood, part iron. Stands in for the 3-iron, at about 21 degrees.
        • 3-wood Fairway wood, typically about 15 degrees. Long shots from the fairway and lay-up tee shots.
        • 4-hybrid Stands in for the 4-iron, at about 24 degrees. The 3 and 4 are the most common hybrids.
        • 5-hybrid A 5-iron replacement at about 27 degrees, seen most in ladies' and seniors' sets.
        • 5-wood Fairway wood with 18 to 21 degrees of loft.
        • 7-wood A high-lofted wood carried in place of a long iron. Seen more in ladies' and seniors' sets.
        • Driver Also called the 1-wood. The lowest loft of the woods, usually 9 to 13 degrees. Built for the tee.

        Irons 7

        • 3-iron Long iron, about 20 degrees in a modern set. Many golfers carry a hybrid or a 7-wood instead.
        • 4-iron Long iron, about 23 degrees. Low launch, long carry, small margin for error.
        • 5-iron About 26 degrees. Sits on the line between the long irons and the mid irons.
        • 6-iron Mid iron, about 29 degrees. A longer approach club.
        • 7-iron Mid iron, about 33 degrees. The last of the mid irons before the short irons.
        • 8-iron Short iron, about 37 degrees. High flight for approach shots.
        • 9-iron Short iron, about 41 degrees. The last numbered iron before the wedges.
