Letters with a page of their own
Eight letters have a full page where each sport is explained in one line: B, D, E, F, M, N, S and T. The other letters live here.
Q, X, Y and Z
Few sports begin with these. Q has quadrathlon and quoits, Y has yacht racing and yukigassen, and X has one: xare, a form of Basque pelota. We have confirmed no sport that begins with Z.
Football, hockey and other shared names
Fifteen everyday names, such as football, hockey, skiing and cycling, cover several sports each. They are in the alphabet under their own letter, beside the sports they cover, and are counted apart from the 477 sports.
Tips
Accents are folded for the alphabet: épée is under E.
Questions and answers
Is there a sport for every letter of the alphabet?
Almost. This sports alphabet has at least one sport for 25 letters. X has only xare, a form of Basque pelota, and we have confirmed no sport that begins with Z.
What sports start with Q?
Quadrathlon, an endurance event of four disciplines completed one after another, and quoits, a traditional game of throwing metal, rope or rubber rings to land over or near a spike.
What sport starts with X?
Xare, a form of Basque pelota played with a wooden ring strung with a net, so the ball is thrown and not hit. It is the only X sport that passed our check.
What sports start with V or Y?
V has Valencian pilota, varpa, vert skating, vigoro and volleyball. Y has yacht racing and yukigassen, a snowball fight as a competition between two teams of seven.
How was the sports alphabet made?
Nearly all the names come from Wikipedia's List of sports, and each was checked against that sport's own article. Blood sports with animals, games for adults, mind sports and trade-marked games are left out.
How this list was compiled: A sports alphabet compiled by Wheel of Teams: 492 names, of which 477 are sports and 15 are everyday shared names (football, hockey, skiing and the like, each standing for several sports on the list). The names come from Wikipedia's List of sports (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sports), read on 2026-10-04. 275 of the sports are those of our random sport generator, checked on 2026-09-18 and 2026-09-19 against each sport's own English Wikipedia article. The other 202 sports were added on 2026-10-04, each checked against the opening of that sport's own English Wikipedia article (Quoits and Match racing are not on the list page and were checked in their own articles, Xare in the Basque pelota article). Eight letters have been taken through the whole source list so far: B, D, E, F, M, N, S and T. The other letters hold the earlier names, the one-word names of four to six letters that passed the check, and what the source has under Q, V, X, Y and Z. No sport that passed the check begins with Z. Left out: blood sports with animals, games for adults, mind sports and board games, trade-marked games, games from a book or a film, historical games no longer played, and entries whose own article does not describe a sport played under rules.
