Zodiac Spin the Wheel: Star Signs and Animals: how it works
This zodiac spin the wheel holds two full sets of twelve: the western star signs from Aries to Pisces and the Chinese zodiac animals from Rat to Pig. Pick a set, or narrow the western signs to one element, then press Spin the wheel. Each result shows its dates, element and ruling planet, or the animal's years.
Turn a star sign into a birthday
A sign pins a birthday to about thirty days. Land on Scorpio and the birthday falls between 23 October and 21 November. Four signs open a season: Aries begins at the March equinox, Cancer at the June solstice, Libra at the September equinox and Capricorn at the December solstice.
Work out a Chinese zodiac animal from an age
The Chinese zodiac gives an animal to a year, not a month, so work from an age. A character who is 12 in a story set in 2026 was born in 2014, a Year of the Horse like 2026 itself. The animal changes at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January: someone born on 20 January 2026 is a Snake, because the Horse year began on 17 February.
Tips

Signs that share an element sit four months apart. Filter to Fire signs and only Aries, Leo and Sagittarius stay.
At a party, spin an animal and ask who was born in its year. The card names two of its years; the rest are 12 apart.
Questions and answers
Why is there no thirteenth sign?
Ophiuchus is left off on purpose. The Sun sits in front of that constellation from about 29 November to 18 December, and a 13th sign made headlines in January 2011. But the signs are twelve equal parts of the Sun's yearly path, fixed to the equinox, and no longer line up with the constellations they are named after.
Does a zodiac sign say anything true about a person?
No. Astrology has no scientific validity, so the result cards list dates, elements and planets and stop there. For an invented character a sign is still a useful hook: it fixes a birthday, suggests a symbol for a costume, and gives two characters something to argue about.
Why do other tables give my sign different dates?
A sign starts at the moment the Sun reaches a set point on its path, and that moment shifts by up to a day between years. One table starts Leo on 22 July, another on 23 July, and both are rounding. On a boundary date, only the birth year settles it.

Dragon5th in the cycle. Yang, fixed element Earth. Its years include 10 February 2024 to 28 January 2025, and 2036. The only animal of the twelve that does not exist. In the legend it could fly but stopped to bring rain to a village.
Goat8th in the cycle. Yin, fixed element Earth. Its years include 19 February 2015 to 7 February 2016, and 6 February 2027 to 25 January 2028. Korean and Japanese versions call it the Sheep.
Horse7th in the cycle. Yang, fixed element Fire. Its years include 2014, 17 February 2026 to 5 February 2027, and 2038. The Snake's trick cost it sixth place in the legend.
Monkey9th in the cycle. Yang, fixed element Metal. Its years include 8 February 2016 to 27 January 2017, and 2028. In the legend it crossed on a raft with the Goat and the Rooster, clearing the weeds out of the way.
Ox2nd in the cycle. Yin, fixed element Earth. Its years include 12 February 2021 to 31 January 2022, and 2033. It carried the Rat over the river and was beaten to the bank. The Vietnamese zodiac has a Water Buffalo here.
Pig12th and last in the cycle. Yin, fixed element Water. Its years include 5 February 2019 to 24 January 2020, and 2031. In the legend it stopped to eat, fell asleep and arrived last. Japan's version has a Wild Boar.
Rabbit4th in the cycle. Yin, fixed element Wood. Its years include 22 January 2023 to 9 February 2024, and 2035. It hopped across on stones and then a floating log. The Vietnamese zodiac has a Cat in this place.
Rat1st in the 12-year cycle. Yang, fixed element Water. Its years include 25 January 2020 to 11 February 2021, and 2032. In the race legend it crossed the river on the Ox's back, then jumped off and finished first.
Rooster10th in the cycle. Yin, fixed element Metal. Its years include 28 January 2017 to 15 February 2018, and 2029. The only bird of the twelve. In the legend it found the raft that three animals shared.
Snake6th in the cycle. Yin, fixed element Fire. Its years include 29 January 2025 to 16 February 2026, and 2037. In the legend it hid on the Horse's hoof and startled it at the finish line.
Tiger3rd in the cycle. Yang, fixed element Wood. Its years include 1 February 2022 to 21 January 2023, and 2034. In the legend it was strong enough to swim the river, but the current pushed it downstream.
