Wheel of Months: how it works

Twelve months, twelve equal segments: this wheel of months gives January to December the same chance on every spin. Tap a season, such as Jun to Aug, or 31 days or 30 days to narrow it. Each result shows the month's number, its days, its season north and south of the tropics, and which months start on the same weekday.

A hosting rota in twelve spins

A wheel does one thing a calendar cannot: it hands out months without anyone choosing. For a hosting rota, switch to Elimination and let each member take a turn. The month that comes up is theirs, and it leaves the wheel, so each time you spin the wheel, months already taken cannot come up again. If the group skips part of the year, open My list, press Use the 12 months and delete those months.

Why a fair wheel is not a fair birthday

Each month gets one twelfth of this wheel, but months are not one twelfth of a year. Seven have 31 days, four have 30, and February has 28, or 29 in a leap year. By days alone, a random birthday is a little more likely to fall in a 31-day month than in February. For a day as well as a month, spin the birthday wheel.

  • For a calendar quiz, spin and ask which other month starts on the same weekday. May and June are trick questions: nothing matches them.
  • In the lines under the results, a common year means one with no 29 February.

Questions and answers

Which seasons do the filters use?

Meteorological seasons, which are blocks of three whole months. North of the tropics December to February is winter and June to August is summer, and south of them the two swap. Near the equator the year divides into wet and dry seasons instead, and these labels do not apply.

Why do some months always start on the same weekday?

A 31-day month is four weeks and three days, so the next month starts three weekdays later, and a 30-day month pushes it on by two. From 1 April to 1 July is 91 days, exactly 13 weeks, so those two always match. A leap day moves every later month on by one, which changes January's partners.

Can I spin months only, with no season showing?

  • August Month 8, 31 days. Summer north of the tropics, winter south of them. In a common year no other month starts on the same day of the week as August; in a leap year February does.
  • July Month 7, 31 days. Summer north of the tropics, winter south of them. July and April start on the same day of the week every year, and in a leap year January joins them.
  • June Month 6, 30 days. Summer north of the tropics, winter south of them. No other month of the same year starts on the same day of the week as June.

Sep to Nov 3

  • November Month 11, 30 days. Autumn north of the tropics, spring south of them. November and March start on the same day of the week every year, and in a common year February joins them.
  • October Month 10, 31 days. Autumn north of the tropics, spring south of them. In a common year October starts on the same day of the week as January; in a leap year it matches no other month.
  • September Month 9, 30 days. Autumn north of the tropics, spring south of them. September and December start on the same day of the week every year.

Seasons use the meteorological reckoning, in which each season is three whole calendar months and the two hemispheres are opposite, from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Season (checked 2026-09-18). That page limits the four seasons to the temperate and polar regions: many tropical regions have a wet and a dry season instead, which is why each line says north or south of the tropics and not north or south of the equator. Astronomical seasons, which start at the equinoxes and solstices around the 20th to 23rd of March, June, September and December, are not used here.
