      Not the usual list

      Dolphins, sharks, octopuses and starfish are on the animal wheel. This wheel goes further out and further down: a narwhal whose tusk is a tooth, a man o' war that is many animals in one, and a barnacle that stays in one spot for its whole adult life.

      Questions and answers

      Is a Portuguese man o' war a jellyfish?

      No. It looks like one, but it is a siphonophore: a colony of many small animals, each with its own job, such as catching food or digesting it. Together they act as a single animal.

      What is the biggest animal on the wheel?

      The blue whale, the largest animal known to have ever lived, at up to about 30 metres long. Two of the fish, the great white shark and the ocean sunfish, are among the largest fish in the world.

      Deep sea 5

      • Blobfish Lives 600 to 1,200 m down off Australia and New Zealand. Its jelly-like body floats above the sea floor.
      • Giant squid Lives in the deep ocean. About 5 m long, with two feeding tentacles that reach 10 m.
      • Gulper eel A deep-sea eel with a huge mouth like a pelican's, so it is also called the pelican eel.
      • Hatchetfish A small fish of the ocean's middle depths. Not a close relative of the freshwater hatchetfish.
      • Lanternfish A small fish that makes its own light. Some estimates say most deep-sea fish are lanternfish.

      • Beluga The white whale of the Arctic. No fin on its back, so it slips under ice. Nicknamed the sea canary.
      • Blue whale The largest animal known to have ever lived, up to about 30 m long.
      • Narwhal An Arctic whale. Males grow a spiral tusk 1.5 to 3 m long, which is really a tooth.
      • Orca Also called the killer whale. The largest member of the dolphin family; lives in family groups called pods.
      • Sea lion An eared seal with long front flippers. It can walk on all fours.
      • Sea otter Has the densest fur of any animal, and uses rocks as tools to open shells.
      • Walrus Tusks, whiskers and bulk: big Pacific males weigh over 2,000 kg. Lives around the Arctic.

      • Barnacle Related to crabs and lobsters, but the adult stays fixed in one place inside a hard shell.
      • Hermit crab Moves into an empty snail shell to guard its soft body. Over 800 kinds.
      • Man o' war The Portuguese man o' war looks like a jellyfish but is a colony of many small animals.
      • Nudibranch A sea slug that drops its shell as a larva. About 3,000 kinds, many in startling colours.
      • Sand dollar A flat sea urchin that burrows in sand. Also called a sea cookie.
      • Sea urchin A spiny ball that crawls on tiny tube feet and eats mostly algae.

      • Blue tang A bright blue Indo-Pacific surgeonfish, also called the regal or hippo tang.
      • Great white The great white shark: grey on top, white below, with about 300 serrated teeth that keep being replaced.
      • Lionfish Red or black stripes and venomous spines on its fins. Native to Indo-Pacific coral reefs.
      • Moray eel About 200 kinds of eel, found in seas all over the world.
      • Parrotfish Named for its beak-like mouth. Some kinds nibble coral, which adds to the sand on the sea floor.
      • Sunfish The ocean sunfish looks like a fish head with no tail. One of the largest bony fish in the world.
