How this list was compiled

A list of 120 Hawaiian words and short phrases to use as team and group names, chosen by Wheel of Teams on 2026-10-04 and filed in four groups: Ocean and fishing (30), Luau, music and flowers (30), Family, friends and team spirit (30), Land, sky and animals (30). They are words of the Hawaiian language, not the names of teams or schools in Hawaii. Each one was looked up that day as a headword of the Hawaiian Dictionary of Pukui and Elbert (1986), in the text of it printed in the Combined Hawaiian Dictionary at trussel2.com (https://www.trussel2.com/HAW/), read through the copies of its pages kept by the Internet Archive (https://web.archive.org/). The name is spelled as the headword is, with its ʻokina and its kahakō; the line under it gives the dictionary's meaning in our own words, most often its first sense. The page of the words that begin with E could not be reached that day, so no word that begins with E or ʻE is on the list. A word not found was left out. No name of a god and no word of worship is listed. Every name was searched as a title on English Wikipedia, as it is printed and without its marks, and was dropped when the page of that title is, or leads to, a company, a product, a film, a book, a song, a music group, a team or a person. A title that is only a disambiguation page, a place, a page about the animal, plant, thing or idea the word names, or a page about a different word with the same spelling was no reason to drop a name. One-word names were also searched as book titles on Open Library (https://openlibrary.org/), without their marks: one word that is the title of a novel in eight editions was dropped. Compared with Wikipedia's lists of national football team nicknames (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_national_association_football_teams_by_nickname and the seven lists it links): no name of this list is on them. Compared by script the same day with every other list on this site: no name is repeated. Nothing was checked against a trademark register. Licence: own work
