How this list was compiled

A list of 101 words from five languages of India to use as group and team names, chosen by Wheel of Teams on 2026-10-04 and filed by language: Hindi (25), Urdu (15), Tamil (17), Telugu (28), Malayalam (16). They are words of these languages, not the names of teams from India. Each one was looked up that day in its own entry, in the section of its language, of the English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/). The name is printed in its own script as the entry spells it, followed in brackets by the Latin spelling Wiktionary gives for it; that spelling follows the script letter by letter and is not a guide to pronunciation. The line under each name gives the meaning the entry gives, in our own words, and names the language. Wiktionary text is under CC BY-SA 4.0. A word with no entry was left out, and so was a word whose entry has a sense labelled vulgar or derogatory. Names of gods, of parties and of communities were left out. Every name was searched as a title on English Wikipedia in its script, in the printed Latin spelling without its marks and in everyday Latin spellings listed by hand (Dosti for दोस्ती, Vetri for வெற்றி), and was dropped when a page of one of those titles is, or leads to, a film, a television series, a book, a character, a person, an app, a bus service, a trust, a rights group or a term of religion that the word names. Many of these everyday words are also the titles of films or given names that Wikipedia lists on a disambiguation page: a title that is only a disambiguation page, a list of surnames, a place, a page about the thing or idea the word names, or a page about a different word with the same Latin spelling (Asha, a term of the Zoroastrian religion, and UDAN, an airport plan of the government of India, are two) was no reason to drop a name. A spelling that is not on the hand list was not searched. Marathi, Punjabi, Kannada, Bengali and Gujarati are not on this list. Compared by script the same day with every other list on this site: no name is repeated. Nothing was checked against a trademark register. Licence: own work
