Questions and answers

What are cool Japanese team names?

Kaminari (thunder), Tsumujikaze (whirlwind), Gyakuten (reversal) and Zenkai (in full force) are four. Each is a single dictionary word with its own entry.

What are good Japanese team names for a class?

Japanese class or club has 36: Nihongo (the Japanese language), Benkyō (study), Kotowaza (proverb), Undōkai (sports day) and Omedetō (congratulations) among them.

Why are the names not in Japanese writing?

Each name is the word in Latin letters, spelled as its romanized entry in the English Wiktionary spells it. The Japanese spelling is on that entry. This page prints no kanji and no kana.

Is any name taken from an anime, a manga or a game?

None was taken from one. Every name was searched as a title on English Wikipedia, and a word whose page is a comic, a film, a game, a song or a company was dropped. No name is a coined compound.

Where do the meanings come from?

From each word's own entry in the English Wiktionary, read on 2026-10-04 and put in our own words. A word with no entry is not on the list.

How this list was compiled

A list of 121 Japanese words to use as team and group names, chosen by Wheel of Teams on 2026-10-04 and filed in five groups: Animals (17), Weather and nature (21), Strength and speed (25), Team and friends (22), Japanese class or club (36). They are words of the Japanese language, not the names of Japanese teams or bands. Each is written in Latin letters, with a long vowel marked by a line over it, as its own romanized entry in the Japanese section of the English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/) spells it; that entry and the entry of the Japanese spelling it points to were read that day, and the line under each name gives the meaning, in our own words. Wiktionary text is under CC BY-SA 4.0. A word with no romanized entry was left out, and so was a word whose entry has a sense labelled vulgar, derogatory or slang for a part of the body. No word is a coined compound. Every name was searched as a title on English Wikipedia, as it is printed and without the line over a vowel, and was dropped when the page of that title is, or leads to, a comic, a film, a game, an album, a song, a company, a train service or a person. A title that is only a disambiguation page, a list of names, a place, a page about the animal, plant, thing or idea the word names, or a page about a different word that has the same spelling, with the line over a vowel or once it is taken off, was no reason to drop a name; one word was dropped all the same because its disambiguation page lists only songs, films and an asteroid. Some of these words were also the names of ships. One-word names were also searched as book titles on Open Library (https://openlibrary.org/), and two words that are the titles of novels were dropped. Words used in Japan as short names of professional baseball clubs were left out. Compared by script the same day with every other list on this site: no name is repeated. Nothing was checked against a trademark register. Licence: own work
