Questions and answers
Are these Celtic group names?
Irish is a Celtic language, so each name is a Celtic word in that sense. The list has no Scottish Gaelic, Welsh or Breton word, and no name of a music group.
Is this a Gaelic group name generator?
Yes, for Irish, which is also known as Irish Gaelic. A press draws five words from the list, and the menu keeps the draw inside one set. Scottish Gaelic is a different language and is not on this page.
Are the accents part of the spelling?
Yes. Each name is printed as its entry in the English Wiktionary spells it, with the acute accents over its vowels kept, as in Cór or Féile.
Are these the names of real Irish teams or bands?
No. Each one is a dictionary word, not a name copied from a club or a band. A word whose Wikipedia page of the same title is a company, a film, a song, a group or a person was taken off the list.
Where do the meanings come from?
From the Irish section of each word's entry in the English Wiktionary, read on 2026-10-04 and reworded. A word without an entry was left out.

How this list was compiled
A list of 117 Irish words and short phrases to use as group and team names, chosen by Wheel of Teams on 2026-10-04 and filed in four groups: Animals (29), Strength, weather and land (30), Friends, music and Irish class (29), Sports, running and games (29). They are words of the Irish language, not the names of Irish teams or bands. Each one was looked up that day in its own entry, in the Irish section, of the English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/) and is spelled as the entry spells it, with its accents; a plural was read through the entry of its singular. The line under each name gives the meaning the entry gives, in our own words; Wiktionary text is under CC BY-SA 4.0. A word with no entry was left out, and so was a word whose entry has a sense labelled vulgar or derogatory or a sense about drink. Irish is a Celtic language, also known as Irish Gaelic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_language, read that day); no Scottish Gaelic word is on the list. Every name was searched as a title on English Wikipedia and was dropped when the page of that title is, or leads to, a company, a product, a film, a book, a song, a music group, a team or a person. A title that is only a disambiguation page, a place, a page about the animal, plant, thing or idea the word names, or a page about a different word with the same spelling was no reason to drop a name. One-word names were also searched as book titles on Open Library (https://openlibrary.org/): none was dropped for it. Compared with Wikipedia's lists of national football team nicknames (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_national_association_football_teams_by_nickname and the seven lists it links): no name of this list is on them. Compared by script the same day with every other list on this site: no name is repeated. Nothing was checked against a trademark register. Licence: own work
