Questions and answers

What are some Mexican team names ideas?

El Quetzal, El Tlacuache (the opossum), El Mezquite (the mesquite tree) and El Papalote (the kite) are four. Each is one word with its article.

What makes a word Mexican Spanish?

A word is on this list only when its entry in the English Wiktionary labels the word or the sense as Mexican, or gives it as a loan from Nahuatl. El Camión means the bus in Mexico and a truck elsewhere.

Are these the names of real Mexican teams?

The names come from the dictionary and not from teams. Wikipedia's lists of national football team nicknames hold none of them, and a name whose Wikipedia page is a film, a song, a music group or a person was left out.

Is any name also on the Spanish list?

No. The Spanish team names list holds general Spanish words. This one holds only words of Mexico, and a script found no name on both.

Where do the meanings come from?

From each word's own entry in the English Wiktionary, read on 2026-10-04 and put in our own words. A word whose entry has a crude sense is not on the list.

How this list was compiled

A list of 92 words of Mexican Spanish to use as group and team names, chosen by Wheel of Teams on 2026-10-04 and filed in four groups: Animals of Mexico (23), Trees, plants and land (28), Street, home and market (18), Friends, parties and games (23). They are words, not the names of Mexican teams. Each one was looked up that day in its own entry, in the Spanish section, of the English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/), and was kept only when the entry labels the word or the sense as Mexican or gives the word as a loan from Nahuatl. The line under each name gives the meaning the entry gives, in our own words; Wiktionary text is under CC BY-SA 4.0. A word with no entry was left out, and so was a word whose entry has a sense labelled vulgar or derogatory, or a sense about drink or drugs. Every name was searched as a title on English Wikipedia, as it is printed and without its article, and was dropped when the page of that title is, or leads to, a film, an album, a song, a music group, a person, a racehorse or a criminal case. A title that is only a disambiguation page, a list of names, a place, a page about the animal, plant, thing or idea the word names, or a page about a different word with the same spelling was no reason to drop a name. One-word names were also searched as book titles on Open Library (https://openlibrary.org/): none was dropped for it. Compared with Wikipedia's lists of national football team nicknames (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_national_association_football_teams_by_nickname and the seven lists it links): no name of this list is on them. No name is shared with the Spanish team names list. Compared by script the same day with every other list on this site: no name is repeated. Nothing was checked against a trademark register.
