Questions and answers

What are cool Latin team names about winning?

Victores (winners), Invicti (the unconquered), Veni, vidi, vici (I came, I saw, I conquered), Vincit qui patitur (he conquers who endures) and Palma non sine pulvere (no reward without effort).

Is the Latin correct?

Each motto is spelled and translated as Wikipedia's List of Latin phrases gives it, and each single word as its Latin entry in the English Wiktionary gives it. Nothing was composed or translated by this site.

Why are most single words plural?

A group is several people, so the list takes the plural that the word's Wiktionary entry gives: Lupi is the plural of lupus, Amici of amicus. Turma, Legio and Cohors stay singular, since each already names a group.

Are these the mottos of real schools or clubs?

Some phrases are used as mottos by more than one school, regiment or club, as Wikipedia's list notes. None is given here as the motto of any of them, and no school, regiment, company or club is named on this page.

How this list was compiled

A list of 115 Latin mottos and words to use as group and team names, chosen by Wheel of Teams on 2026-10-04 and filed in four groups: Short mottos (30), Single words (30), Class, study group or club (29), Sports team (26). They are Latin, not the names of Latin American teams or bands. Each of the 52 mottos and phrases is on Wikipedia's List of Latin phrases (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Latin_phrases and the pages A to V it links), read that day, and is spelled as the list spells it; the line under it gives the translation the list gives, some of them shortened. Each of the 63 single words was looked up that day in the Latin section of its entry in the English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/), a plural through the entry of its singular, and the line under it gives the meaning from there in our own words. Wikipedia and Wiktionary text is under CC BY-SA 4.0. Nothing was composed, inflected or translated by this site, and a phrase or a word not found was left out. Some of the phrases are used as mottos by schools, regiments and clubs, as the list notes; none is given here as the motto of any of them. Every name was searched as a title on English Wikipedia and was dropped when the page of that title is, or leads to, a company, a product, a film, a book, a song, a music group, a team or a person. A title that is only a disambiguation page, a place, a page about the animal, plant, thing or idea the word names, or a page about a different word with the same spelling was no reason to drop a name. One-word names were also searched as book titles on Open Library (https://openlibrary.org/): none was dropped for it. Compared with Wikipedia's lists of national football team nicknames (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_national_association_football_teams_by_nickname and the seven lists it links): one word that is part of a nickname on them was dropped. Compared by script the same day with every other list on this site: no name is repeated. Nothing was checked against a trademark register. Licence: own work
