How to decide fantasy draft order

Agree the method before anyone knows the result. Press for an idea and read how to run it; the menu that appears keeps you in one set. Settle ties in advance, and run the draw where the whole league can see it.

Random, earned or chosen

A random draw is the fairest for a new league. Reverse standings help last season's bottom teams, as pro drafts do. A draw to choose a slot lets the winner take a late pick, which some managers prefer in a snake draft.

Tips
  • Whatever the contest, keep money and drink out of it: the order should be the only prize.

Questions and answers

What is the fairest way to decide fantasy draft order?

A random draw in front of everyone: names from a hat, a spin of a wheel or a shuffled list on a shared screen. Every manager has the same chance of every slot.

What is a horse race draft order?

Each manager gets a horse, and the finishing order of the race, animated on a screen or moved by dice on a tabletop track, becomes the draft order. It turns the draw into a show.

Should last season's champion pick last?

In a keeper or dynasty league, where rosters carry over, reverse order gives the weakest roster the best pick, as pro drafts do. In a league that redrafts every year every team starts from nothing, so a random draw is enough.

Quick draws 8

  • Coin flip ladder Pair managers up and flip; winners flip against winners until one is left. Losers of each round flip for the places in their round.
  • Deal a deck of cards Deal one card to each manager. Highest card picks first; break a tie by suit, spades high, or by dealing the tied pair again.
  • Names from a hat Write every team on a slip, fold them the same way and draw one at a time. The first slip out picks first.
  • Numbered balls from a bowl Number table tennis balls 1 to 12 and pull one per manager. The number on the ball is the draft slot.
  • Rock paper scissors bracket Seed a bracket at random and play best of three. The champion picks first and the bracket settles the rest.
  • Roll two dice Everyone rolls two dice. Highest total picks first, and tied managers roll again against each other only.
  • Shortest straw Hold one straw per manager, cut to different lengths. The draw order follows straw length, shortest first or longest first as agreed beforehand.
  • Spin a wheel Put every manager on a wheel with elimination on and spin once per slot, with the whole league watching the screen.

Contests at the draft party 13

  • Cornhole tournament Play a quick bracket to 11 points. Seed it at random and let the finishing places set the order.
  • Darts at a board Three darts each. Highest total picks first, and the bull breaks a tie.
  • Egg and spoon relay Run it in heats of four. Fastest time without a drop picks first.
  • Field goal kick-off Kick from the 10, then the 20 and back. Miss and you are out; the last kicker standing picks first.
  • Free throw shootout Ten shots each. Most makes picks first, and a tie goes to a sudden-death shot.
  • Horse race draft order Give each manager a horse in an animated race, or on a tabletop track moved by dice rolls. The finishing order is the draft order.
  • Hot dog building contest Everyone builds a hot dog in one minute and the others vote for the best one. A group judge settles ties.
  • Longest punt Each manager punts once. Measure where the ball lands; longest picks first.
  • Mini golf round Play nine holes the afternoon of the draft. Lowest score picks first.
  • Paper airplane contest Everyone folds one plane from a plain sheet. Longest flight picks first; measure each throw from the same line.
  • Pumpkin or melon roll Roll a small melon down a gentle slope. The one that stops closest to a marker picks first.
  • Tabletop football flick Flick a folded paper football across a table. Closest to the edge without falling off picks first.
  • Trivia quiz Twenty football questions on paper, answered alone. Highest score picks first, and a closest-number question breaks ties.

Earned last season 7

  • Champion picks last, rest drawn Draw slots 1 to 11 from a hat and put last year’s champion at 12.
  • Highest scorer who missed the playoffs The non-playoff team with the most points picks first, so tanking never pays.
  • Losers bracket winner first The team that won the consolation games at the end of last season picks first, so the bottom teams still play hard.
  • Most points against The team that had the most points scored against it last season picks first. It rewards bad luck, not bad management.
  • Reverse standings Last season’s last place picks first and the champion picks last, as in most pro sports drafts.
  • Waiver order carries over The final waiver order from last season becomes this season’s draft order.
  • Weighted draw by finish Put more slips in the hat for teams that finished lower: last place gets the most. Draw once for pick 1, then pull that team’s slips and draw again.

For a league that meets online 5

  • Birthday order The manager whose birthday comes next after draft day picks first, and so on round the calendar.
  • Closest to a number The commissioner writes a number from 1 to 1,000 in a private message beforehand. Closest guesses pick first.
  • Online random order Type every manager into a random order generator on a shared video call and screenshot the result.
  • Team name alphabet Sort teams by the last letter of their team name, Z first. Cheap, quick and nobody can game it after the names are set.
  • Weather guess Everyone guesses the high temperature in the commissioner’s town on draft day. Closest guess picks first.

Draw to choose your slot 4

  • Auction the slots for points Give everyone 100 pretend points and bid on slots. Highest bid chooses a slot first. The points are imaginary and go nowhere.
  • Draw to choose a slot Draw names as usual, but the first name out chooses any slot, the second chooses from what is left, and so on.
  • Race to choose Run any contest above, then let the winner choose a slot instead of taking pick 1. Some managers prefer the turn at the end.
  • Slot swap window Draw the order, then allow trades of slots for one day before the draft. Trade only slots or later picks, never money.
