Number Wheel 1-10: how it works
This number wheel 1-10 has ten equal segments, so each number from 1 to 10 has a one-in-ten chance on every spin. Tap Odd, Even, 1 to 5 or 6 to 10 to spin only those numbers. The line under each result gives the partner that makes ten and how the number looks on a ten frame.
Spin for a turn, a question or a table
Ten numbers settle small things: which of ten questions gets answered, which table lines up first, how many star jumps the class does in PE. For turn order, have the players count off from one to ten and switch to Elimination. Each winner leaves the wheel, so nobody is picked twice. Put them back refills it for the next round. Tally counts every win instead. Thirty spins rarely come out even, which starts a talk about chance.
Number bonds to ten from a single spin
A number bond to ten is a pair that adds up to 10. There are five pairs to learn, plus 10 and 0: 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5. Spin, cover the line under the result, and let the class call the partner before you show it. A ten frame is two rows of five squares, so 7 fills one row and two more, and the three empty squares are the answer.
Tips
- If the cardboard spinner from a maths game has gone missing, a spinner wheel 1-10 on a phone or a classroom board does the same job.
- Only five choices to vote on? Tap 1 to 5 and the wheel redraws with five segments.
- Older children can spin twice and multiply: every times-table fact up to 10 × 10.
Questions and answers
Is every number equally likely on the 1-10 number wheel?
Yes. Each spin gives all ten numbers the same one-in-ten chance. The number is picked in your browser first and the turning wheel only shows it, so a hard tap or a soft one makes no difference.
Which numbers from 1 to 10 are prime?
Four of them: 2, 3, 5 and 7. A prime has exactly two factors, 1 and itself. That leaves out 1, which has only one factor, and it makes 2 the only even prime. 9 catches people out: it looks prime, but it is 3 × 3.
Can I add 0, or go past 10?
Yes. Open My list, press Use the 10 numbers, then add a line for 0, 11 or 12. Your own list spins the numbers alone, without the number bond line. For a longer run, the number wheel generator opens on 1 to 20 and takes up to 100 numbers.
