A shuttlecock, also called a shuttle or a birdie, is traditionally made of sixteen overlapping feathers set in a rounded cork base. A clear sends it high to the back of the opponents' court. A drop shot is hit softly so that it falls sharply into the forecourt, and a smash is hit hard downward.
