How it works

A 13 team double elimination bracket gives Seeds 1, 2 and 3 byes and sends the other ten into Games 1 to 5. Seed 4 gets no bye: it plays Seed 13 in Game 3. Game 24 is the final and Game 25 its replay.

Three byes, five opening games

A 13 team seeded double elimination bracket leaves three of sixteen lines empty, opposite Seeds 1, 2 and 3. They wait in Games 6, 8 and 7 for the winners of Games 1, 5 and 4. Game 9 is the one quarterfinal between two round one winners.

The odd game in the losers bracket

Five round one losers cannot pair off. Only the losers of Games 2 and 3 meet each other, in Game 10, and its loser is thirteenth alone. The losers of Games 1, 4 and 5 go straight to Games 11, 13 and 14 against quarterfinal losers.

Tips
  • Two courts take 13 slots, three take 10, four take 9. The if game adds one.
  • On two courts Games 2 and 3 can go first: their losers play again soonest, in Game 10.
  • A fourteenth team? Set the Teams box to 14: Seed 3 loses its bye. These notes still describe 13.

Questions and answers

How many games are in a 13 team double elimination bracket?

Twenty-four, or 25 with a replayed final: 12 winners bracket games, 11 losers bracket games and the championship. A 13 team round robin needs 78.

Which seeds get a bye with 13 teams?

Seeds 1, 2 and 3. Each can win the title in four games; Seeds 4 to 13 need at least five. The longest title road is nine games.

Can two teams meet twice?

Game 19 is the earliest chance: it can repeat Game 1, 2 or 3. Game 20 can repeat Game 4 or 5. Games 10 to 14, 17 and 18 never pair teams that have met.

How are places decided on a 13 team double elimination tournament bracket?

By the game a team goes out in. Thirteenth is the Game 10 loser alone; four share ninth, two seventh, two fifth; then come fourth and third. For this double elimination bracket 13 teams need no extra placing games.

How this list was compiled: Bracket layout worked out by Wheel of Teams; it is the layout the bracket maker on this page draws, compared game for game. Thirteen teams go on the 16-slot double elimination bracket with standard seeding (1 v 16, 8 v 9, 5 v 12, 4 v 13, 3 v 14, 6 v 11, 7 v 10, 2 v 15 down the sheet). The three slots for Seeds 14 to 16 stay empty, and every game that would have an empty slot in it is removed. That gives Seeds 1 to 3 a bye and sends each loser to the place it would have in the full bracket. Every road a seed can take through the 24 games was followed, 357 in all (a team's road depends only on its own results): each one ends as champion with at most one loss, or out with exactly two. Then all 16,777,216 possible sets of results were played through. The checks agree: the total is always 24 or 25 games, no two teams can meet twice before Game 19, a champion plays between 4 and 9 games, and the fewest time slots are 24, 13, 10 and 9 on one, two, three and four courts, plus one if Game 25 is played. The seed paths list the games a seed plays while it keeps winning. The game count (2n - 2, or 2n - 1 when the winner is not undefeated), the two-game final and the names 'if game' and 'bracket reset' were checked on 2026-10-04 against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-elimination_tournament.
