        Battery 2

        • Catcher C, scorebook 2. Crouches behind home plate, decides which pitch comes next and blocks the ones in the dirt. The only fielder facing the whole field, so the catcher directs the defense. The mask, chest protector and shin guards are nicknamed the tools of ignorance.
        • Pitcher P, number 1 in the scorebook. Starts every play from the mound. One of the two most specialized jobs on the field: a pitcher rarely plays anywhere else, and works with the catcher to hold runners close and stop the steal.

        Bat only 2

        • Designated hitter DH. Bats in the pitcher's place and never takes the field. The American League adopted it in 1973 and both major leagues have used it since 2022. If the DH moves to a fielding position mid-game, the team loses the DH for the rest of that game.
        • Extra hitter EH. In leagues that bat the whole roster, the players without a fielding spot that inning go in the order as extra hitters. Unlike a DH, an extra hitter does not bat for anyone: the order just gets longer.

        Infield 4

        • First baseman 1B, scorebook 3. Keeps a foot on the bag and stretches toward the throw to beat the runner. Wears a long mitt with no separate fingers, built to scoop low throws. The one infield spot where a left-handed thrower is the ideal.
        • Second baseman 2B, scorebook 4. Plays between first and second base and needs quick hands more than a big arm. Turns the pivot on a double play: catch at the bag, turn, throw to first in one motion. Second base is called the keystone.
        • Shortstop SS, scorebook 6, between second and third base. More batted balls reach the shortstop than any other position, and the throw to first is a long one. The job began around 1849 as a short fielder relaying throws in from the outfield.
        • Third baseman 3B, scorebook 5. Third base is the hot corner: often the infielder standing closest to the batter, and right-handed hitters pull the ball hard this way. Needs fast reactions and a strong, accurate arm for the long throw across the diamond.

        Pitching roles 5

        • Closer CL. Usually the best reliever on the staff, saved for the ninth inning to protect a lead. Every team had one by the 1970s, and the job later narrowed to a single inning.
        • Left-handed specialist A left-handed reliever brought in to retire left-handed batters, once for a single hitter at a time. Since 2020 every pitcher must face three batters or finish the half-inning, which has all but ended the one-batter version of the job.
        • Middle reliever MR. Any pitcher who enters after the starter is a reliever. Middle relievers take the innings between the starter and the late-game pair, and soak up innings when their team is well behind.
        • Setup pitcher SU, the setup man. Generally pitches the eighth inning with a lead and hands the ninth to the closer. Usually the second-best arm in the bullpen.
        • Starting pitcher SP. Throws the first pitch of the game and must finish five innings to qualify for the win. A five-man rotation is most common, so a starter usually rests three to five days between games, and about 100 pitches is the usual limit.

        Outfield 6

        • Center fielder CF, scorebook 8. Generally the fastest of the three outfielders, because center has the most ground to cover. Takes the balls hit into both gaps and backs up the corner outfielders. Often bats leadoff.
        • Left fielder LF, scorebook 7. Usually handles more chances than the right fielder, since right-handed hitters mostly send the ball to the left side. Many left fielders have the speed for center field but not the throwing arm it asks for.
        • Left-center fielder LCF. Slow-pitch softball uses ten fielders, and most teams spend the extra one in the outfield: four outfielders, named left, left-center, right-center and right. This is the left half of what would be center field.
        • Right fielder RF, scorebook 9. Tends to have the best arm in the outfield, because the right field throw to third base is the longest one out there. Runners circle the bases counterclockwise, so most of them are running away from the right fielder.
        • Right-center fielder RCF. The right half of center field when a slow-pitch team plays four outfielders. Slow-pitch can also be played with nine fielders when a team is short.
        • Rover Also called a roamer: the extra outfielder in slow-pitch softball, the tenth fielder. A newer habit in league and tournament play brings that player in as a fifth infielder instead, behind the pitcher, left or right of second base.

        Fill the whole field in nine spins

        Choose Nine fielders, then spin nine times. The Results list numbers the positions 1 to 9: read down your roster and give each player the spot beside their place. Put them back refills the wheel for the next inning. Nine plus DH makes ten jobs for ten players. Ten fielders trades the center fielder for a left-center and a right-center fielder, the usual slow-pitch softball outfield. For one-off spins, switch to Normal.

        What the scorebook numbers mean

        Scorers number the fielders to write plays down fast: pitcher 1, catcher 2, first base 3, second base 4, third base 5, shortstop 6, then left, center and right field as 7, 8 and 9. A 4-6-3 double play went second baseman to shortstop to first baseman.

        • Coaching kids: deal Nine fielders every inning so nobody lives in right field. If only two of them pitch and catch, give those two the Pitcher and Catcher results and keep spinning for the other seven.

        Which baseball positions are on the wheel?

        Can it pick a random MLB position?

        Yes.         Which baseball position is the hardest to play?

        One well-known answer is the defensive spectrum that Bill James set out in the 1980s. From easiest to hardest it runs designated hitter, first base, left field, right field, third base, center field, second base, shortstop, catcher, pitcher.
