Player123456

This sheet has no totals: it is a record to fill in.

Notes

Battery: P is 1, C is 2
Pitcher and catcher. Write the letters or the scoring numbers, whichever your players read faster.
Infield: 1B is 3, 2B is 4, 3B is 5, SS is 6
First base, second base, third base and shortstop. Players inside one group change places most easily.
Outfield: LF is 7, CF is 8, RF is 9
Left field, center field and right field. A center fielder can usually cover right field too.
Bench BN
BN marks a player sitting out an inning. A fair chart gives nobody BN in two boxes side by side until the whole team has sat once.

How it works

This baseball dugout chart is a blank grid: a line for each of 12 players and a box for each of six innings. Write the position every player takes in every inning, then print it.

Fill in the baseball position sheet

Put the players down the side. In each inning box write a position, in the letters or numbers listed under the chart, or BN for the bench. Then read down each column: every position once, everyone else sitting. Read along a line and you see how often one player sat.

A softball position chart with seven innings

7 innings: softball adds a seventh box, the scheduled length of softball and high school baseball. Its notes add the tenth fielder of slow-pitch softball.

  • Fill in pitcher and catcher first. They are the specialised spots, and the other seven are easier to swap.
  • A printed chart in a sheet protector takes a dry-erase marker when a player turns up late.

Questions and answers

What are the numbers on a baseball position template?

1 pitcher, 2 catcher, 3 first base, 4 second base, 5 third base, 6 shortstop, 7 left field, 8 center field, 9 right field. Scorekeepers use the same numbers, so the chart and the scorebook agree.

Is this a fillable softball position chart?

Yes. Pick the seven-inning chart, type names and positions into the boxes and print. It is also a free printable softball position chart: print it blank and use a pen.

Can it be a baseball lineup and position template in one?

Yes. List the players in the order they bat, and the line number is the batting place with the defensive lineup for every inning beside it. For a card with jersey and substitute boxes, use the batting order template.

Does it make the baseball defensive lineup for me?

No. This page is the blank chart a coach fills in. To have a typed roster turned into a batting order and a fielding chart for every inning, use the baseball lineup generator.
