The visiting team bats in the top half of every inning and the home team in the bottom half. Top and bottom are named after these two lines of the board.
Type 0 for a half inning with no runs
Leave a box empty only while that half is still to be played. A zero is a score. An empty box is not.
R adds itself up on screen
R is the total of the inning boxes in its row and changes with every number you type. On a printed blank, add the row by hand after the last out.
H and E are counted by the scorekeeper
Hits belong to the team at bat and errors to the team in the field. Neither can be worked out from the runs, so keep a tally and type the totals.

Inning boxes, 1 to 9 9

  • 1st inning The visitors bat first, in the top half, so their runs go in the top row. The home team bats in the bottom half, and three outs end each half.
  • 2nd inning Type 0 when a half inning ends with no runs. An empty box means that half has not been played, so a full row of typed boxes shows a late arrival where the game is.
  • 3rd inning A widely used youth run rule ends a six-inning game once one team leads by 15 runs after three innings.
  • 4th inning The same youth run rule ends a six-inning game on a lead of 10 runs after four innings.
  • 5th inning Many high school associations end a seven-inning game on a lead of 10 once the trailing team has batted in five innings. Some use a lead of 15 after three or four.
  • 6th inning The last scheduled inning in the youngest youth leagues, where a game is six innings long.
  • 7th inning The last scheduled inning in softball and in high school baseball. Some minor league doubleheaders are played as seven-inning games too.
  • 8th inning On the nine-inning boards only. International tournament rules end a nine-inning game on a lead of 10 once the trailing team has completed seven innings.
  • 9th inning The last scheduled inning in professional and college baseball. If the home team leads after the top half, the bottom half is not played and a line score shows an X in that box.

Extra-inning boxes, 10 to 12 3

  • 10th inning The first extra inning, played only when the score is level after the last scheduled inning. Extra innings go on until one team leads when an inning ends.
  • 11th inning A home team that goes ahead in the bottom of an extra inning wins on the spot. The visitors can never win that way, because the home team always gets its half.
  • 12th inning The last inning box on the extra-innings board. Japanese professional baseball calls a regular-season game a tie if it is still level after twelve innings.

R, H and E 6

  • E: errors Errors charged to this team's fielders, so they happen while the other team bats. An error is a misplay that, in the scorer's judgment, lets a batter or runner advance or keeps a batter alive. Wild pitches and passed balls are counted separately.
  • H: hits Typed by the scorekeeper, never worked out from the runs. A batter gets a hit for reaching first base safely on a fair ball without the help of an error or a fielder's choice. Walks and hit batters are not hits.
  • R: runs over 6 innings The six inning boxes of the row added together, for the youngest youth leagues and for short classroom or backyard games.
  • R: runs over 7 innings The seven inning boxes of the row added together, for softball and high school baseball. A tie after seven means extra innings, so move to the extra-innings board or write the extra runs beside the sheet.
  • R: runs over 9 innings Every inning box in the row, added up as you type. This is the score of the game, and the row with more runs is marked as leading.
  • R: runs over 12 innings All twelve boxes added together. Innings 10 to 12 stay empty, and count as nothing, in a game that ends after nine.

How to keep the board 9

  • A runner on second to start an extra inning Softball starts every extra half inning this way, and the top North American professional league has done the same in regular-season games since 2020. If that runner scores, the run goes in the inning box like any other.
  • H and E are counted by the scorekeeper Hits belong to the team at bat and errors to the team in the field. Neither can be worked out from the runs, so keep a tally and type the totals.
  • Home team ahead after the top of the last inning The bottom half is not played. On paper, write an X in that box. On screen, leave it empty, because the boxes take numbers only.
  • The home team stops batting when it wins A go-ahead run in the bottom of the last inning, or of any extra inning, ends the game at once. Type the runs that counted and leave the later boxes empty.
  • Level after the last inning Play extra innings until one team leads when an inning ends. Use the board with innings 10 to 12, or write the extra runs to the right of a printed board.
  • R adds itself up on screen R is the total of the inning boxes in its row and changes with every number you type. On a printed blank, add the row by hand after the last out.
  • Run rules end a lopsided game early A common youth rule stops a six-inning game on a lead of 15 after three innings or 10 after four, and many high school games stop on a lead of 10 after five. The numbers differ from league to league, so check your own rule book.
  • Type 0 for a half inning with no runs Leave a box empty only while that half is still to be played. A zero is a score. An empty box is not.
  • Visitors on the top line, home team below The visiting team bats in the top half of every inning and the home team in the bottom half. Top and bottom are named after these two lines of the board.

How it works

This baseball scoreboard template is a printable, self-adding line score, not a graphic to edit in a slide or design program. It has two rows, Visitors and Home, a box for every inning, then R, H and E. Type the runs after each half inning and R adds itself up. Print blank sheet gives an empty board for a dugout wall, a classroom review game or a backyard party.

Keep a running line score from the first pitch

Type each team's name over Visitors and Home, or leave them. After every half inning, type the runs that scored: visitors in the top row, home team in the bottom row, which is where top of the third and bottom of the third come from. Type 0 for a half with no runs, so an empty box always means not played yet. R updates with every number, and the row in front is marked as leading.

Four boards: 9, 7 and 6 innings, and extras to the 12th

The menu above the board switches length. Nine innings is the professional and college game, seven is softball and high school baseball, and six is what the youngest youth leagues play. The fourth board adds innings 10, 11 and 12 for a game that is level after nine. It has fifteen columns, so on a phone the grid slides sideways inside its own frame while the team names stay pinned at the left.

Print a blank board for the dugout, the classroom or a party

Print blank sheet puts the open board on Letter or A4 with its key underneath, ready for a clipboard or the dugout wall. Print this game prints the names, runs and totals as they stand. Teachers use the six-inning blank for review baseball. One common version: a right answer is a base, four bases is a run, and three wrong answers retire the side.

  • Home team ahead after the top of the last inning? It does not bat again. Write an X in that box on paper. On screen, leave it empty: the boxes take numbers only.
  • E goes in the row of the team in the field, H in the row of the team at bat. Mixing them up is the classic first-game mistake.
  • Slide a printed blank into a sheet protector and keep score with a dry-erase marker. One sheet lasts the season.

Questions and answers

Can I edit this scoreboard in a slide or design program?

No, and it is better to say so plainly. This page is a fill-in table that adds itself up and prints. It is not an image file, a slide or a layered design. What do R, H and E mean on a baseball scoreboard?

Runs, hits and errors. R is the score, and here it is worked out from the inning boxes. H counts the times a batter reached first base safely on a fair ball without the help of an error or a fielder's choice, so walks and hit batters are left out. E counts misplays by that team's fielders that let a batter or runner advance, as judged by the scorer.

Why is there an X in the bottom of the ninth on some scoreboards?

Because that half inning was never played. When the home team is already ahead after the visitors bat in the last scheduled inning, the game is over and the home team does not come to the plate. A line score marks the unplayed half with an X so that nobody reads it as a zero. The same happens in the seventh of a seven-inning game.

How many innings should my scoreboard have?

Match your league. Professional and college games are scheduled for nine innings, softball and high school baseball for seven, and the youngest youth leagues for six. For a classroom or backyard game, pick six. A run rule can end a lopsided game sooner, and the key under the six and seven inning boards lists common ones. Leagues differ, so agree the numbers before the first pitch.

Are the names and scores saved anywhere?

Only in your own browser. The team names and every box are kept on the phone or computer you typed them on, so a reload does not lose the game, and nothing is sent to us. New game clears the runs and keeps the names, and Undo brings the cleared game back if you pressed it by mistake.
