17 Team Round Robin Schedule: how it works

A 17 team round robin is 136 games: every team meets the other 16 once. One team has no opponent each round, so it takes 17 rounds of eight games, with one bye per team. The example fits one day on eight courts. For a league, play one round a week.

136 games on 8, 4 or 3 courts

The example uses eight courts, 20-minute slots and a 10:00 start: one slot per round, 17 slots, done at 3:40. Teams play in 16 of the 17 slots, so 20 minutes must cover changeovers. Four courts need two slots a round and finish at 9:20 pm. A fifth, sixth or seventh court changes nothing: eight games still take two slots. Three courts take 17 hours: a weekend, or a league.

A 17-week league: who gets which week off

One round a week makes a 17-week season. Clear First match starts and the clock times go. Untick Random draw, press Make schedule, and the week off follows typing order. Line 2 rests in week 9, the exact middle. Even lines 2 to 16 rest in weeks 9 down to 2, odd lines 3 to 17 in weeks 17 down to 10. A club that will miss week 12 goes on line 13.

Tips

  • An 18th team costs no extra weeks: 18 teams also play 17 rounds, the newcomer fills the bye, and 136 games become 153.
  • Home and away come out level: every team is listed first in 8 of its 16 games, which an even field can never manage.
  • Under Show only, pick a team and print its 16 games and week off, or save a PDF from your browser's print window.

Questions and answers

Why is it 136 games and not 272?

Seventeen teams times 16 opponents is 272, but that counts every game twice, so a single round robin is 136: 17 rounds of eight. Press Double and it is 272: 34 rounds, 32 games a team.

Can 17 teams play a full round robin in one day?

Only with eight courts and short games. With fewer courts, split into pools of 6, 6 and 5: 15, 15 and 10 games, 40 instead of 136. The top two of each pool plus the two best third-placed teams fill an eight-team bracket. Compare the thirds on points per game, since the pool of five plays one game fewer.

Why do the standings look uneven partway through the season?

One team rests every week. After week 5, five teams have had their bye and played four games, the other twelve have played five. Rank by win percentage or points per game until round 17, when everyone has played 16.
