18 Team Tournament Bracket
Two opening games, fourteen byes, then a full round of 16: seventeen games to a champion.
18 Team Tournament Bracket: how it works
In single elimination, an 18 team tournament bracket is a 16 team sheet with two opening games bolted on. Seeds 16 and 17 play for the line opposite Seed 1, Seeds 15 and 18 for the line opposite Seed 2, and the other 14 wait in the round of 16.
Two opening games, fourteen byes
The sheet has 32 lines and 14 are empty, so Seeds 1 to 14 skip round one. Game 1 is 16 against 17, and its winner meets Seed 1 in Game 3. Game 2 is 15 against 18, and its winner meets Seed 2 in Game 10. Those four need five wins for the title; everyone else needs four. The rest of the round of 16 is 8 v 9, 5 v 12, 4 v 13, 3 v 14, 6 v 11 and 7 v 10.
Fewest slots on one to five courts
One court needs 17 slots. A second court cuts that to 9, a third to 7, a fourth to 6. Five rounds never fit in fewer than 5 slots, and that takes five courts. Games 4 to 9 are between bye seeds, so they can start beside the opening games. Give every winner a slot off and four courts need 9.
Tips
- Put Games 1 and 2 on first, on separate courts. Seeds 1 and 2 cannot play until they finish.
- League playoff? The cut that matters is between 14th and 15th: Seed 14 starts in the round of 16, while Seed 15 has to win an extra game and then meets Seed 2.
- At least eight teams play just once. If that is too few, run pools first and seed the best eight into an 8 team bracket.
Questions and answers
Who gets a bye in an 18 team bracket?
Seeds 1 to 14. Only the bottom four play in round one, and the two winners draw the hardest games, against Seeds 1 and 2. Seed from league standings or pool results, and announce the method before Game 1.
Does an 18 person tournament bracket work the same way?
Yes. For cornhole, darts or pool, put a player on each line and play 17 matches. With no rankings, press Random draw where everyone can see. Whoever lands on 15 to 18 plays the extra match, and the room saw it was luck.
What if a team drops out, or a 19th turns up?
Set the Teams box to the new count. With 17, Seed 15 moves into the round of 16 against Seed 2, only 16 v 17 is played first, and the day drops to 16 games. With 19, a third opening game appears, 14 against 19, whose winner meets Seed 3: 18 games.
Every game in the 18-team bracket
18 teams, single elimination: 17 games in 5 rounds. Seeds 1 to 14 have a bye.
Games of the 18-team bracket, in playing order
| Game | Round | Teams | Winner goes to | Notes |
| 1 | Round 1 | Seed 16 vs Seed 17 | Game 3 | One of only two games in round one: Seeds 16 and 17 play for the line opposite Seed 1. The winner goes to Game 3, the loser is out after one game. |
| 2 | Round 1 | Seed 15 vs Seed 18 | Game 10 | Seeds 15 and 18 play for the line opposite Seed 2. Start it at the same time as Game 1 if you have two courts, because both top seeds are waiting on this round. |
| 3 | Round of 16 | Seed 1 vs Winner of Game 1 | Game 11 | Seed 1 comes off its bye against a team that has already played once: Seed 16 if the higher seed wins Game 1. It cannot start until Game 1 is over. |
| 4 | Round of 16 | Seed 8 vs Seed 9 | Game 11 | Both teams had a bye, so this game can be played while the opening round is on. The closest pairing on paper in this round, and its winner is lined up to meet Seed 1. |
| 5 | Round of 16 | Seed 5 vs Seed 12 | Game 12 | Two bye seeds, so it does not have to wait for the opening round. |
| 6 | Round of 16 | Seed 4 vs Seed 13 | Game 12 | Seed 4 anchors the second quarter of the sheet. Two bye seeds, so the game can run alongside the opening round. |
| 7 | Round of 16 | Seed 3 vs Seed 14 | Game 13 | Seed 14 is the lowest seed with a bye, and its first game is against Seed 3. |
| 8 | Round of 16 | Seed 6 vs Seed 11 | Game 13 | Two bye seeds, free to start in the first slot of the day. |
| 9 | Round of 16 | Seed 7 vs Seed 10 | Game 14 | Two bye seeds. Its winner is lined up to meet Seed 2, or whichever of Seeds 15 and 18 gets past Seed 2. |
| 10 | Round of 16 | Seed 2 vs Winner of Game 2 | Game 14 | Seed 2 comes off its bye against the Game 2 winner: Seed 15 if the higher seed wins. It cannot start until Game 2 is over. |
| 11 | Quarterfinal | Winner of Game 3 vs Winner of Game 4 | Game 15 | If seeds hold: Seed 1 v Seed 8. A Game 1 winner that reaches it is playing its third game while the other side plays its second. |
| 12 | Quarterfinal | Winner of Game 5 vs Winner of Game 6 | Game 15 | If seeds hold: Seed 5 v Seed 4. |
| 13 | Quarterfinal | Winner of Game 7 vs Winner of Game 8 | Game 16 | If seeds hold: Seed 3 v Seed 6. |
| 14 | Quarterfinal | Winner of Game 9 vs Winner of Game 10 | Game 16 | If seeds hold: Seed 7 v Seed 2. |
| 15 | Semifinal | Winner of Game 11 vs Winner of Game 12 | Game 17 | If seeds hold: Seed 1 v Seed 4. |
| 16 | Semifinal | Winner of Game 13 vs Winner of Game 14 | Game 17 | If seeds hold: Seed 3 v Seed 2. |
| 17 | Final | Winner of Game 15 vs Winner of Game 16 | Champion | If seeds hold: Seed 1 v Seed 2. |

How this list was compiled: Layout worked out by Wheel of Teams. Eighteen teams go on a 32-line sheet; Seeds 19 to 32 do not exist, so Seeds 1 to 14 have byes and only 16 v 17 and 15 v 18 are played in round one. Two separate scripts agree on the 17 games and on the fewest slots for one to five courts.
