11 Team Tournament Bracket Double Elimination: how it works

For an 11 team tournament bracket, double elimination means 20 games, or 21 if the final is replayed. Seeds 1 to 5 get byes while 8 plays 9, 6 plays 11 and 7 plays 10. Fill it in here or print it blank.

Five byes, three opening games

Eleven teams go into a 16-slot frame, and the five empty slots sit opposite Seeds 1 to 5. Seeds 1, 3 and 2 wait for the winners of Games 1, 2 and 3. Seeds 4 and 5 get less from their bye: they play each other in Game 4, so one of them is in the losers bracket after one game.

Loser drops, game by game

No first-round loser drops in against another one. The losers of Games 1, 2 and 3 go to Games 8, 9 and 10, where they meet the losers of Games 7, 4 and 5 in that order. The crossing is deliberate: send the Game 1 loser to meet the Game 5 loser and Seeds 8 and 9 could replay Game 1 at once. The Game 6 loser has no partner, so it skips a round and enters at Game 13. Later drops: Game 11 to 15, Game 12 to 16, Game 17 to 19.

Tips

  • Two courts need 11 slots, 12 with the if game. Game 8 waits on Game 7, so pair Games 7 and 9, then 8 and 10. Three courts need 9, four need 8.
  • A twelfth entry takes Seed 5's bye. Set the Teams box to 12: names stay, results clear, and these notes stop applying.
  • Play Game 17 beside Game 18, not earlier. Then both Game 19 teams have just played, and the unbeaten team sits out only one slot.

Questions and answers

How many games are in an 11 team double elimination bracket?

Twenty, or 21 if the final is replayed: ten in the winners bracket, nine in the losers bracket and the championship. Game 21 is played only when the losers bracket team wins Game 20; the sheet draws it dashed so a blank printout has it.

Which seeds get a bye with 11 teams?

Seeds 1 to 5. Any of them can win the title in four games: Seed 1 would play Games 5, 11, 17 and 20. The longest road is nine games: win in round one, lose Game 5 or Game 7, then win seven straight.

Can two teams or players meet twice?

Not before Game 15. The earliest rematch repeats Game 1 there: the Game 1 loser wins Games 8 and 13 while the Game 1 winner upsets Seed 1, then loses Game 11. Game 16 can repeat Game 2 or Game 3 the same way.

How this list was compiled: Bracket layout worked out by Wheel of Teams. We start from the full 16-slot double elimination bracket with standard seeding (1 v 16, 8 v 9, 5 v 12, 4 v 13, 3 v 14, 6 v 11, 7 v 10, 2 v 15 down the sheet), leave the five slots for Seeds 12 to 16 empty, and remove every game that would have an empty slot in it. That gives Seeds 1 to 5 a first-round bye and sends each loser to the place it would have in the full bracket. Two separate scripts then played out all 1,048,576 possible sets of results for the 20 games. They confirmed that every team is out after exactly two losses, that the total is always 20 or 21 games, that no two teams can meet twice before Game 15, that a champion plays between 4 and 9 games, and that the fewest time slots are 20, 11, 9 and 8 on one, two, three and four courts, plus one if Game 21 is played.
