College Football Wheel: Random Team Generator: how it works

This college football wheel carries all 138 top-division programs for the 2026 season, sorted into 10 conferences and two independents. Choose a conference, press Spin the wheel, and it stops on one school. Inside a conference every team is equally likely: 1 in 16 in the SEC, 1 in 8 in the rebuilt Pac-12. This summer's moves are in.

A random college football team generator for dynasty saves

One reason to spin is a dynasty save in a college football video game: you coach whichever school the spinner stops on. The MAC, Conference USA or the Sun Belt means a long climb with a small program; the Big Ten or the SEC means a league of 18 or 16. Or take a program new to this level: North Dakota State and Sacramento State moved up for 2026, Delaware and Missouri State in 2025.

Ten conferences after the 2026 realignment

The chips follow football membership for 2026. The Pac-12 is back to eight: Oregon State and Washington State, joined by Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Utah State and Texas State. The Mountain West added UTEP, Northern Illinois and North Dakota State. Sacramento State moved up into the MAC, and Louisiana Tech went to the Sun Belt. Notre Dame and UConn sit under Independents.

Tips

  • CFB rebuild rule: spin the MAC, take whoever comes up, and stay until it wins the conference.
  • Online dynasty: tap one conference and switch to Elimination, so every coach gets a different school and you all meet on the schedule.
  • Need a game tonight? Spin twice inside one conference, then get a football final from the score generator.

Questions and answers

Which schools are on the college football team wheel?

All 138 programs in the top division, the FBS, in 2026, checked against Wikipedia's table of FBS programs and ESPN's standings on 18 September 2026. Second-division (FCS) schools are left out; type any you want into My list. Long names are cut short on the wheel; the result card and the list below print them in full.

Is the wheel fair to small conferences?

Among the teams showing, yes. With one conference chosen each school has the same chance: 1 in 14 in the American, 1 in 10 in the Mountain West. With all 138 on, this random NCAA football team generator lands in the Big Ten most often only because it has 18 schools.

Does the college wheel work for other sports?

Not as it stands. Conferences differ by sport: Notre Dame is independent only in football, and Northern Illinois plays its other sports elsewhere. For hoops, use the college basketball wheel. Or tap My list and type your own wheel of colleges.

How this list was compiled: All 138 programs in the top division of college football (the Football Bowl Subdivision) for the 2026 season, grouped by the conference each one plays football in: 10 conferences plus two independents. Schools, nicknames, football conferences and first seasons were taken on 2026-09-18 from the table at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_Division_I_FBS_football_programs (raw wikitext, 138 rows), and the membership of every conference was checked the same day against the 2026-27 standings at espn.com/college-football/standings, which lists the same 138 teams in the same 11 groups. Conference moves from 2022 to 2026 come from the year-by-year tables at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021-2026_NCAA_conference_realignment, read the same day. 'Campus in' is the school's location as en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_Division_I_institutions gives it (read 2026-09-19), the same source the college basketball wheel on this site uses, so a school shows one campus on both pages; for eight schools the football table names a neighbouring place instead (Illinois, Rutgers, SMU, Notre Dame, UNLV, Air Force, Ole Miss and Mississippi State). A few teams play home games elsewhere, such as UConn in East Hartford, so it is not called a stadium location. Football conference can differ from a school's conference in other sports: Northern Illinois, North Dakota State and Sacramento State are football-only members, and Notre Dame is independent in football alone. North Dakota State and Sacramento State are in the first year of a two-year move up and are counted here because both sources list them. Second-division (FCS) programs are not included. Names are plain text used to describe the wheel; no logos, colors or artwork are used. Conference membership changes most summers, so the list is re-checked every August.
