How this list was compiled: All 138 programs in the top division of college football (the Football Bowl Subdivision) for the 2026 season, grouped by the conference each one plays football in: 10 conferences plus two independents. Schools, nicknames, football conferences and first seasons were taken on 2026-09-18 from the table at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_Division_I_FBS_football_programs (raw wikitext, 138 rows), and the membership of every conference was checked the same day against the 2026-27 standings at espn.com/college-football/standings, which lists the same 138 teams in the same 11 groups. Conference moves from 2022 to 2026 come from the year-by-year tables at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021-2026_NCAA_conference_realignment, read the same day. 'Campus in' is the school's location as en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_Division_I_institutions gives it (read 2026-09-19), the same source the college basketball wheel on this site uses, so a school shows one campus on both pages; for eight schools the football table names a neighbouring place instead (Illinois, Rutgers, SMU, Notre Dame, UNLV, Air Force, Ole Miss and Mississippi State). A few teams play home games elsewhere, such as UConn in East Hartford, so it is not called a stadium location. Football conference can differ from a school's conference in other sports: Northern Illinois, North Dakota State and Sacramento State are football-only members, and Notre Dame is independent in football alone. North Dakota State and Sacramento State are in the first year of a two-year move up and are counted here because both sources list them. Second-division (FCS) programs are not included. Names are plain text used to describe the wheel; no logos, colors or artwork are used. Conference membership changes most summers, so the list is re-checked every August.
