This random NHL team generator is a wheel carrying all 32 teams of the 2026-27 season, 16 from each conference, with Utah under its current name, the Mammoth. Press Spin the wheel and it stops on one team, and every team has the same 1 in 32 chance. Chips narrow it to East, West or a division of eight.

Who spins an NHL team wheel

One use is a hockey video game save: franchise mode, or a career with a club you did not choose. Another is to pick a random NHL team to follow from October. Randomizer, picker, wheel spinner: the job is the same. Age carries no weight: the Montréal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs have been members since the first season in 1917, the Seattle Kraken since 2021.

East, West and four divisions of eight

East or West leaves 16 teams. A division chip leaves eight. The Atlantic holds Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montréal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay and Toronto: four of the Original Six in one division. The top three in each division reach the playoffs, joined by the two next-best records in each conference.

Tips

Questions and answers

Is Utah on the wheel as the Mammoth?

Yes. The club played its first season, 2024-25, as the Utah Hockey Club and took the Mammoth name for 2025-26. It is an expansion team that received the Arizona Coyotes' players, so the wheel has no Arizona entry. All 32 names were checked against nhl.com/info/teams and Wikipedia on 18 September 2026.

Which teams on the wheel began in another city?

Six. The Carolina Hurricanes were the Hartford Whalers until 1997, the Colorado Avalanche the Quebec Nordiques until 1995 and the Dallas Stars the Minnesota North Stars until 1993. The New Jersey Devils began in Kansas City and the Calgary Flames in Atlanta. So did the Winnipeg Jets, as the Thrashers: Atlanta has lost two teams to Canada.

'Plays in' is the municipality of the home arena as the Wikipedia table gives it, which is why the Florida Panthers show Sunrise, the New York Islanders show Elmont and the Vegas Golden Knights show Paradise, Nevada.
