        How this list was compiled: All 32 teams of the National Hockey League for the 2026-27 season, with the conference and division each one plays in. Team names, conferences, divisions, home cities and the founded and joined years were checked on 2026-09-18 against the list of teams at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hockey_League, and the 32 names and four divisions of eight were checked the same day against the league's own list at nhl.com/info/teams. The league writes Montréal with its accent, so the wheel does too. 'Plays in' is the municipality of the home arena as the Wikipedia table gives it, which is why the Florida Panthers show Sunrise, the New York Islanders show Elmont and the Vegas Golden Knights show Paradise, Nevada. The years of franchise moves were checked on the same date at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_and_relocated_National_Hockey_League_teams, and the Utah club's name change at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_Mammoth. 'Joined' is the year of the first NHL season; for the three clubs on this list that came from the World Hockey Association in 1979 (the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche and Edmonton Oilers) it is 1979. The fourth club of that merger, the original Winnipeg Jets, is not on the list: today's Jets began in 1999 as the Atlanta Thrashers.         Who spins an NHL team wheel

        Most spins are for a hockey video game save, franchise mode or a career with a club you did not choose; others pick a random NHL team to follow from October. The randomizer ignores history: the Montréal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs date from the first season in 1917, the Seattle Kraken from 2021.

        East, West and four divisions of eight

        East or West leaves 16 teams. A division leaves eight. The Atlantic holds Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montréal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay and Toronto: four of the Original Six in one division. The top three in each division reach the playoffs, joined by the two next-best records in each conference.

        Questions and answers

        Is Utah on the wheel as the Mammoth?

        Yes. The club played its first season, 2024-25, as the Utah Hockey Club and took the Mammoth name for 2025-26. It is an expansion team that received the Arizona Coyotes' players, so the wheel has no Arizona entry.

        Which teams on the wheel began in another city?

        Six. The Carolina Hurricanes were the Hartford Whalers until 1997, the Colorado Avalanche the Quebec Nordiques until 1995, the Dallas Stars the Minnesota North Stars until 1993. The New Jersey Devils began in Kansas City, and the Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets both in Atlanta.
