Notes

Positions by scorekeeping number
1 pitcher, 2 catcher, 3 first base, 4 second base, 5 third base, 6 shortstop, 7 left field, 8 center field, 9 right field. The number in the Position box says where the batter plays in the field.
The order is set before the first pitch
Once the umpire has handed the lineup cards to the two managers the batting order is final, and it changes only by substitution.
A substitute bats in the same place
A player who comes in takes the batting place of the player replaced. Write the new name in that line's Sub in box.
Sub in can be Inning or Notes
Type over the heading to change it. The new heading is printed with the filled card only: a blank print carries nothing you typed.

How it works

This batting order template is an empty card: nine batting lines with boxes for jersey, player, position and sub in, then six substitute lines. Print it blank for a pen, or type the lineup and print. Nothing is generated.

A baseball batting order sheet with substitute lines

Write the batters in the order they hit, one a line, with the jersey number and the fielding position by its scorekeeping number, 1 to 9. A substitute takes the batting place of the player replaced, so the new name goes in that line's Sub in box.

Four cards: 9, 10, 12 or 15 batting lines

Ten lines adds a line for a designated or extra hitter. Everyone bats is 15 lines for a continuous order, with no substitute lines. Slowpitch has 12 lines for ten fielders and two extra hitters, the card for men's or co-ed slowpitch.

Tips
  • The printed title has blanks for both teams and the date, so one blank print can be copied all season.
  • Add #sheet=slowpitch to the page address to open on the slowpitch card. #sheet=ten and #sheet=everyone-bats work the same way.

Questions and answers

Is there a batting order template for men's softball?

Yes. Pick Slowpitch: 12 batting lines, because slow-pitch softball is played with ten fielders and the two spare lines take extra hitters. Write EH in the Position box for a batter with no fielding spot.

Can I print a blank batting order sheet?

Yes. Print blank sheet prints the open card with every box empty: the numbered lines, the four headings and the notes underneath. Choose Save as PDF in the print window to keep a file.

What do the position numbers 1 to 9 mean?

They are the scorekeeping numbers: 1 pitcher, 2 catcher, 3 first base, 4 second base, 5 third base, 6 shortstop, 7 left field, 8 center field and 9 right field.

Does it make the batting order for me?

No. This page is the empty card. To have a typed roster turned into a batting order and a fielding chart for every inning, use the baseball lineup generator.

All 10 rows and notes

Batting and substitute lines 2

  • Batter The batting lines, numbered in the order the players hit. Each has boxes for the jersey number, the player's name, the fielding position and, if the player is replaced, the substitute who came in. Nine lines on the first card, and ten, twelve or fifteen on the others.
  • Sub Six lines under the batting order for the substitutes on the bench, with the same four boxes. When one enters the game, write the batting line taken in the Sub in box.

What goes in the boxes 8

  • A substitute bats in the same place A player who comes in takes the batting place of the player replaced. Write the new name in that line's Sub in box.
  • EH has no fielding spot A player in the batting lineup without a position on the field is marked EH, for extra hitter, in youth and adult amateur baseball. Write EH in the Position box.
  • Everyone bats in a continuous order A continuous batting order puts every available, eligible player in the order, and the game runs through that whole order. This card has 15 lines and no substitute lines, because nobody is out of the order.

What goes in the boxes, continued

  • The order is set before the first pitch Once the umpire has handed the lineup cards to the two managers the batting order is final, and it changes only by substitution.
  • Positions by scorekeeping number 1 pitcher, 2 catcher, 3 first base, 4 second base, 5 third base, 6 shortstop, 7 left field, 8 center field, 9 right field. The number in the Position box says where the batter plays in the field.
  • Slowpitch fields ten Slow-pitch softball is played with ten fielders, or nine if needed. The card has 12 batting lines, ten fielders and two extra hitters; leave a line empty if your team bats fewer.
  • Sub in can be Inning or Notes Type over the heading to change it. The new heading is printed with the filled card only: a blank print carries nothing you typed.
  • What DH means on the card A designated hitter bats in place of the pitcher and generally plays no defense. Under high school rules in the United States a DH may bat for one player at any position. Write DH in the Position box. On the Ten lines card the tenth line takes an extra hitter, or the pitcher's name when a DH bats in the pitcher's place.

How this list was compiled: The card is our own work: numbered batting lines with Jersey, Player, Position and Sub in boxes, and six substitute lines. No roster, team or league is loaded. Checked on 2026-10-02: the nine fielding positions and their scorekeeping numbers, 1 pitcher to 9 right fielder (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball_positions); the batting lineup being final once the home plate umpire has given the lineup cards to the opposing managers, with changes only by substitution, and a substitute taking the place of the original player in the batting order (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batting_order_(baseball)); the designated hitter batting in place of the pitcher and generally not fielding, a DH batting for one player at any position under high school rules in the United States, and the extra hitter, EH, as a player in the batting lineup without a position on the field (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Designated_hitter); slow-pitch softball played with ten fielders, or nine if needed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Softball); a continuous batting order placing all available, eligible players in the batting order, in a youth baseball organization's help page (https://www.littleleague.org/help-center/what-is-a-continuous-batting-order/). Nine, ten, twelve and fifteen lines are layout choices; no roster size rule is stated. Licence: The card, the choice of rows and the notes are own work.
