A team to follow or play as
A new fan wants a side to follow for a season and cannot choose. Someone starting a franchise save in a basketball video game wants a roster they did not pick. Either way the wheel gives a newcomer the same chance as a founder: the New York Liberty, Los Angeles Sparks and Phoenix Mercury have played under those names since the first season in 1997, the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire only since 2026.
Two conferences, no divisions
This league has no divisions, so the only chips are Eastern and Western, and they are uneven: seven teams and eight. Several names hide where the team plays. Connecticut, Golden State, Indiana and Minnesota play in Uncasville, San Francisco, Indianapolis and Minneapolis. Atlanta, Dallas and Las Vegas play outside the city they are named for, in College Park, Arlington and Paradise.

Questions and answers
How many teams are on the wheel?
Fifteen. The league played with 12 through 2024, added the Golden State Valkyries in 2025, then the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire in 2026. Toronto is the first team based outside the United States. All 15 were checked against wnba.com/teams and the league's Wikipedia article on 18 September 2026.
Do the conferences matter, or are they only a filter?
Mostly a filter. Since 2016 the eight best records reach the playoffs whatever the conference. The league still lists seven clubs in the East and eight in the West, and its in-season cup games are played inside a team's own conference.
Will the list change next season?
Not through expansion. The next new team is Cleveland in 2028, then Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia in 2030, which would make 18. A move may come sooner: a sale of the Connecticut Sun and a move to Houston for 2027 has been reported. The wheel keeps the Sun in Uncasville until the league's own team page says otherwise.
