How it works

A 14 team double elimination bracket rests Seeds 1 and 2 while Seeds 3 to 14 play Games 1 to 6. Seed 1 then meets Seed 8 or 9, and Seed 2 meets Seed 7 or 10. Game 26 is the final.

Six opening games, two byes

A 14 team double elimination tournament bracket uses fourteen of sixteen lines. Game numbers follow the sheet from the top: 8 v 9, 5 v 12, 4 v 13, 3 v 14, 6 v 11, 7 v 10. Games 9 and 10 are quarterfinals between opening winners.

Two losers games, then four

The losers of Games 2 and 3 meet in Game 11 and the losers of Games 4 and 5 in Game 12; those two games send out the teams tied for thirteenth. The Game 1 and Game 6 losers skip that round and face the Game 8 and Game 7 losers.

Tips
  • Two courts take 14 slots, three take 11 and four take 9, plus one for Game 27.
  • Seed 1 and Seed 2 can each finish tied for ninth: lose the quarterfinal, then Game 16 or Game 13.
  • Fifteen teams? Set the Teams box to 15: Seed 2 loses its bye. The game notes here still describe 14.

Questions and answers

14 team tournament bracket double elimination: how many games?

26, or 27 if the final is replayed. Thirteen are in the winners bracket and twelve in the losers bracket; Game 26 is the championship. A single 14 team bracket has 13 games and a 14 team round robin 91.

Who gets a bye with 14 teams?

Seeds 1 and 2. Either can take the title in four games; Seeds 3 to 14 need five. Seed 3 is the highest seed that plays in round one, against Seed 14 in Game 4.

When can a pairing repeat?

The earliest possible rematch is Game 21: it can bring back the pairing of Game 1, 2 or 3. Game 22 can do the same for Games 4, 5 and 6. Eight losers bracket games, 11 to 16, 19 and 20, cannot repeat anything.

Does it work as a 14 person double elimination bracket?

Yes. Type one player per line, best first; the top two lines get the byes. No player can play more than nine games, the if game included.

How this list was compiled: Bracket layout worked out by Wheel of Teams; it is the layout the bracket maker on this page draws, compared game for game. Fourteen teams go on the 16-slot double elimination bracket with standard seeding (1 v 16, 8 v 9, 5 v 12, 4 v 13, 3 v 14, 6 v 11, 7 v 10, 2 v 15 down the sheet). The two slots for Seeds 15 and 16 stay empty, and every game that would have an empty slot in it is removed. That gives Seeds 1 and 2 a bye and sends each loser to the place it would have in the full bracket. Every road a seed can take through the 26 games was followed, 398 in all (a team's road depends only on its own results): each one ends as champion with at most one loss, or out with exactly two. Then all 67,108,864 possible sets of results were played through. The checks agree: the total is always 26 or 27 games, no two teams can meet twice before Game 21, a champion plays between 4 and 9 games, and the fewest time slots are 26, 14, 11 and 9 on one, two, three and four courts, plus one if Game 27 is played. The seed paths list the games a seed plays while it keeps winning. The game count (2n - 2, or 2n - 1 when the winner is not undefeated), the two-game final and the names 'if game' and 'bracket reset' were checked on 2026-10-04 against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-elimination_tournament.
