12 Team Tournament Bracket
A 12 team single elimination bracket: four byes, four opening games, and every quarterfinal sets a rested seed against a team that has just won.
12 Team Tournament Bracket: how it works
A 12 team tournament bracket, single elimination, gives Seeds 1 to 4 a bye and sends Seeds 5 to 12 into four opening games. Each winner walks into a quarterfinal against a seed that has not played yet. Eleven games, four rounds, one champion.
Four byes, and who each top seed meets
Twelve is four short of 16, so a third of the field skips round one. The winner of 8 v 9 meets Seed 1, of 5 v 12 Seed 4, of 6 v 11 Seed 3 and of 7 v 10 Seed 2. A top-four seed wins the title in three games; everyone else needs four. The line between fourth and fifth is worth a whole round, so break ties for it in public.
Two courts, three courts, four courts
One court needs 11 slots, two need 6, three 5 and four 4. No quarterfinal can start early: each waits on an opening game. On two courts, number order gives every opening-round winner a slot off before its quarterfinal, but Game 10 and the final follow straight on. Put breaks there.
Tips
- From four pools of three, seed winners and runners-up in pool order A, B, C, D as Seeds 1 to 8 and thirds B, A, D, C as Seeds 9 to 12. No pool game can repeat before the semifinals.
- Type names to fill it in on screen; with none entered it prints as a blank 12 team tournament bracket template. Print two: one for the wall, one for the scorer's table.
- Want every winner to rest a slot between games? Two or three courts then need 8 slots, four courts 7.
Questions and answers
Is single elimination the right tournament bracket for 12 teams?
It is the quickest: 11 games, against 66 for a 12 team round robin. The cost: at least four teams are out after one game, up to eight if top seeds lose their quarterfinals. To promise everyone more, play four pools of three, then seed all 12 into this sheet.
Does it work as a 12 player tournament bracket?
Yes. A 12 person tournament bracket, or 12 man bracket, for singles pickleball, darts or cornhole has one name per line and 11 matches. With no rankings, press Random draw with everyone watching: whoever lands on Seeds 1 to 4 skips a round.
What changes with 11 teams, or 13?
Set the Teams box to either number: names stay, results clear. With 11, Seed 5 gets a fifth bye and goes straight into a quarterfinal against Seed 4: 10 games. With 13, Seed 4 loses its bye and plays Seed 13 in a fifth opening game: 12. For a dropout, delete its line from Names first.

Games of the 12-team bracket, in playing order
| Game | Round | Teams | Winner goes to | Notes |
| 1 | Round 1 | Seed 8 vs Seed 9 | Game 5 | The closest opening game on paper, and the winner's reward is a rested Seed 1 in Game 5. |
| 2 | Round 1 | Seed 5 vs Seed 12 | Game 6 | Seed 5 is the highest seed without a bye, one place short of skipping this game. The winner goes to Game 6 to meet Seed 4. |
| 3 | Round 1 | Seed 6 vs Seed 11 | Game 7 | Seed 6 against Seed 11 for a quarterfinal with Seed 3. |
| 4 | Round 1 | Seed 7 vs Seed 10 | Game 8 | Seed 7 against Seed 10 for a quarterfinal with Seed 2. |
| 5 | Quarterfinal | Seed 1 vs Winner of Game 1 | Game 9 | Seed 1's first game, against a team that has already won once: Seed 8 if the higher seed wins Game 1. It cannot start until Game 1 is over. |
| 6 | Quarterfinal | Seed 4 vs Winner of Game 2 | Game 9 | Seed 4 holds the last of the four byes. If seeds hold: Seed 4 v Seed 5, the closest quarterfinal on paper, with one side rested and the other a game in. |
| 7 | Quarterfinal | Seed 3 vs Winner of Game 3 | Game 10 | Seed 3 comes off its bye against the Game 3 winner: Seed 6 if the higher seed wins. |
| 8 | Quarterfinal | Seed 2 vs Winner of Game 4 | Game 10 | Seed 2 comes off its bye against the Game 4 winner: Seed 7 if the higher seed wins. |
| 9 | Semifinal | Winner of Game 5 vs Winner of Game 6 | Game 11 | If seeds hold: Seed 1 v Seed 4, each playing only its second game. |
| 10 | Semifinal | Winner of Game 7 vs Winner of Game 8 | Game 11 | If seeds hold: Seed 3 v Seed 2. On two courts played in number order it follows straight on from Games 7 and 8, so plan a break before it. |
| 11 | Final | Winner of Game 9 vs Winner of Game 10 | Champion | A top-four seed reaches it in its third game, any other seed in its fourth. If seeds hold: Seed 1 v Seed 2. |

How this list was compiled: Layout worked out by Wheel of Teams. Twelve teams go on a 16-line sheet; Seeds 13 to 16 do not exist, so Seeds 1 to 4 have byes and round one is 8 v 9, 5 v 12, 6 v 11 and 7 v 10. Two separate scripts agree on the 11 games and on the slot counts for one to four courts, and tested which seedings from four pools of three keep pool games from repeating.
