How it works

A three team double elimination bracket starts with Seed 2 against Seed 3 while Seed 1 waits. The winner plays Seed 1, the two losers meet in Game 3, and Game 4 is the final. Game 5 replays it if the unbeaten team loses.

Four games in a fixed order

Every game waits for the one before it, so a double elimination bracket for 3 teams runs one game at a time and a second court saves nothing. Game 2 is already the winners bracket final. Its loser drops to Game 3 against the Game 1 loser, and the Game 3 loser finishes third.

The same two teams, again

Game 3 repeats Game 1 whenever Seed 1 wins Game 2. Game 4 is a first meeting only when Seed 1 wins Game 2 and the Game 1 loser wins Game 3. With three entries, rematches are the rule.

Tips
  • For a 3 person double elimination bracket, type the three players best first; the top line gets the bye.
  • Whoever wins Game 3 plays the final next, with no game in between to rest.
  • A fourth team? Change the Teams box to 4 and the bye goes. The notes here still describe three.

Questions and answers

How many games are in a three team double elimination bracket?

Four, or five when the final is replayed: two in the winners bracket, one in the losers bracket and the championship. A 3 team round robin takes three.

Who gets the bye with three teams?

Seed 1. It can win the title in two games, Game 2 and Game 4. Seeds 2 and 3 need at least three and can play five.

Is the fifth game always played in a 3 team double elimination tournament?

No. It is played only when the Game 3 winner also wins Game 4. Then both finalists have one loss, and Game 5 settles it. If the Game 2 winner wins Game 4, the tournament ends there.

How do you seed three teams?

Type them best first: line one is Seed 1 and gets the bye. With no rankings, press Random draw and the order, bye included, is shuffled for you.

Each seed's unbeaten path, and where a first loss drops it 3

  • Seed 1: Game 2 and Game 4 The top seed does not play Game 1. It waits in Game 2, and a loss there sends it to Game 3 against the team that lost Game 1. Two wins, Game 2 and Game 4, are enough for the title.
  • Seed 2: Game 1, Game 2 and Game 4 Plays Seed 3 in Game 1 as the higher seed. Whether it loses Game 1 or wins it and then loses Game 2 to Seed 1, its next game is Game 3: on one side after Game 1, on the other after Game 2. To win unbeaten it needs Game 1, Game 2 and Game 4.
  • Seed 3: Game 1, Game 2 and Game 4 Opens against Seed 2 in Game 1, the only game without Seed 1 in the winners bracket. Whether it loses Game 1 or wins it and then loses Game 2 to Seed 1, its next game is Game 3: on one side after Game 1, on the other after Game 2. To win unbeaten it needs Game 1, Game 2 and Game 4.

How this list was compiled: Bracket layout worked out by Wheel of Teams; it is the layout the bracket maker on this page draws, compared game for game. Three teams go on the 4-slot double elimination bracket with standard seeding (1 v 4, 2 v 3 down the sheet). The one slot left empty faces Seed 1, and every game that would have an empty slot in it is removed. That gives Seed 1 a bye and sends each loser to the place it would have in the full bracket. Every road a seed can take through the 4 games was followed, 29 in all (a team's road depends only on its own results): each one ends as champion with at most one loss, or out with exactly two. Then all 16 possible sets of results were played through. The checks agree: the total is always 4 or 5 games, no two teams can meet twice before Game 3, a champion plays between 2 and 5 games, and the four games have to be played one after another however many courts there are, with Game 5 after them if it is needed. The seed paths list the games a seed plays while it keeps winning. The game count (2n - 2, or 2n - 1 when the winner is not undefeated), the two-game final and the names 'if game' and 'bracket reset' were checked on 2026-10-04 against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-elimination_tournament.
