How it works

A 16 team double elimination bracket has no byes: all sixteen play in the Round of 16, Seed 1 against Seed 16 in Game 1 and Seed 2 against Seed 15 in Game 8. Game 30 is the final and Game 31 the if game.

Eight opening games, eight drops

On a 16 team double elimination tournament bracket the first eight losers stay in their own quarter: the losers of Games 1 and 2 meet in Game 13, 3 and 4 in Game 14, 5 and 6 in Game 15, 7 and 8 in Game 16. Those four games send home the teams tied for thirteenth.

Quarterfinal losers change halves

The losers of Games 9, 10, 11 and 12 drop to Games 20, 19, 18 and 17, on the far half of the losers bracket. That keeps every pairing new until Game 25. Semifinal losers enter at Games 25 and 26.

Tips
  • Two courts take 16 slots, three take 12 and four take 10; Game 31 adds one.
  • With sixteen there is no shorter road: every seed needs five wins for an unbeaten title, and none can play more than nine games.
  • Fifteen teams? Set the Teams box to 15 and Seed 1 gets a bye. The game notes here still describe 16.

Questions and answers

How many games are in a 16 team double elimination bracket?

30, or 31 with a replayed final: fifteen winners bracket games, fourteen losers bracket games and the championship. A single 16 team bracket has 15 and a 16 team round robin 120.

Can I use it as a 16 person double elimination bracket?

Yes: for singles play it is the same sheet, a 16 man double elimination bracket. Type one player per line, best first, and line one becomes Seed 1, drawn against line sixteen.

Can two teams meet twice?

Yes, from Game 25 on. Game 25 can repeat any of Games 1 to 4 and Game 26 any of Games 5 to 8. The ten losers bracket games before them, 13 to 20, 23 and 24, never can.

Where does each team finish?

Four tie for thirteenth, four for ninth, two for seventh and two for fifth. The Game 28 loser is fourth and the Game 29 loser third. The runner-up is the loser of the last game played.

How this list was compiled: Bracket layout worked out by Wheel of Teams; it is the layout the bracket maker on this page draws, compared game for game. Sixteen teams fill the 16-slot double elimination bracket exactly, with standard seeding (1 v 16, 8 v 9, 5 v 12, 4 v 13, 3 v 14, 6 v 11, 7 v 10, 2 v 15 down the sheet), so nobody has a bye. Every road a seed can take through the 30 games was followed, 480 in all (a team's road depends only on its own results): each one ends as champion with at most one loss, or out with exactly two. Then all 1,073,741,824 possible sets of results were played through. The checks agree: the total is always 30 or 31 games, no two teams can meet twice before Game 25, a champion plays between 5 and 9 games, and the fewest time slots are 30, 16, 12 and 10 on one, two, three and four courts, plus one if Game 31 is played. The seed paths list the games a seed plays while it keeps winning. The game count (2n - 2, or 2n - 1 when the winner is not undefeated), the two-game final and the names 'if game' and 'bracket reset' were checked on 2026-10-04 against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-elimination_tournament.
