How it works

A 4 team double elimination bracket takes 6 games, or 7 when the losers bracket team wins the first final. All four teams play at once in round 1, so nobody gets a bye. Type your teams or players in seed order, best first, or print it blank.

Where each loser drops

Game 1 is Seed 1 against Seed 4 and Game 2 is Seed 2 against Seed 3. Their losers meet in Game 4, the first elimination game, and it can never be a rematch. The winners meet in Game 3. The Game 3 loser drops into Game 5, the losers bracket final, where it can meet a team it already played.

The championship and the if game

The Game 3 winner arrives at Game 6 unbeaten, so one win ends it. The losers bracket team must win Game 6 and then Game 7, the if game or bracket reset. Agree before Game 1 whether to play it. The Game 4 loser finishes fourth and the Game 5 loser third.

Tips

Two courts pair Games 1 and 2, then 3 and 4; Games 5 and 6 run alone: 4 slots, or 5 with the if game.
The losers bracket winner plays Games 4, 5 and 6 back to back. Put a break before the championship.

Questions and answers

How many games are in a 4 team double elimination bracket?

Six, or seven if the final is replayed: three in the winners bracket, two in the losers bracket and the championship. Single elimination for four takes three games.

Can two teams meet twice with four teams?

Yes. Game 5 can repeat Game 1 or Game 2, and the championship can repeat Games 1, 2 or 3. Game 4, between the two first-round losers, never can.

How many games can a team play?

The champion plays three to five. A team that loses its first game and then wins every game after it, including the if game, plays five.

How this list was compiled: Bracket layout worked out by Wheel of Teams by the family's method: we start from the full 8-slot double elimination bracket with standard seeding (1 v 8, 4 v 5, 3 v 6, 2 v 7), leave the unused slots empty, and remove every game that would have an empty slot in it, which gives the top seeds their byes and sends each loser to the same place it would go in the full bracket. The same script reproduces this site's published 8-team layout exactly. Every possible set of results was run through the layout by script (all 64) to confirm that each team is out after exactly two losses, that the games always number 6 or 7, and to find where a rematch can happen.
