32 Team Tournament Bracket: how it works

A 32 team tournament bracket has no empty lines and no byes: 16 games in round one, then 8, 4, 2 and the final, 31 in all. Every team needs five wins, and half the field is out after one game. Rank the teams, or draw them.

Seeding: where the top 16 sit

Round one gives each of Seeds 1 to 16 its own game against a team ranked 17 to 32, from 1 v 32 down to 2 v 31. The two seeds in every game add up to 33. Seeds 1 to 8 cannot meet before the quarterfinals. With rankings for only your best eight, type them as the first eight lines of Names and add the other 24 below in drawn order. Random draw would reshuffle all 32.

Thirty-one games need more than one court

Two courts need 16 slots, three 12, four 9 and eight 6. On four courts in game order, the bottom half's round of 16 fills slot 6 and the last three rounds follow in slots 7, 8 and 9, so a finalist from that half plays four slots running. Plan a break before the semifinals, or stop after Game 24 and leave seven games for day two.

Tips

  • For a bigger day-two sheet, type the winners of Games 17, 23, 21, 19, 20, 22, 24 and 18, in that order, into the 8 team bracket: its Games 1 to 7 are this sheet's 25 to 31.
  • For three games each, play eight pools of four and send the top two into a 16 team bracket.

How long does a 32 man tournament bracket take at pool or darts?

It is 31 matches: a 32 person tournament bracket is this sheet, one player per line. Four tables or boards need nine slots, three hours at 20 minutes a match; eight need six, two hours. Wrestling gets the championship side only: wrestlebacks are not drawn here.

What if 31 or 33 teams enter?

Set the Teams box to the real count. With 31, Seed 1 has a bye into the round of 16. A 33rd team turns it into a 64-line sheet, where Seeds 32 and 33 play one extra game for the line opposite Seed 1: 32 games.
