    Company Name of the day

    How it works

Press New company name and three parts land: an opener, an emblem of pay and contract such as Ledger, Coin or Banner, and a company word, historical like Free Company or science fiction like Outfit. For stories and games only.

    Read the full guide

Put your captain or home port first

Type a name in Your captain or home port, for example Harrow, and every name opens with it: Harrow Ledger Free Company. Tap a part: the padlock keeps it and the arrows change that part alone.

Where the historical names came from

A free company answered to no government, which is the free in the name. The Tard-Venus of the 1360s were the late-comers. No medieval source explains the White Company's name; the usual view is its polished armor. The Black Bands took their name from black mourning colors. Varangian, as in the Varangian Guard, comes from an Old Norse word for a sworn companion.

    Tips
    • For a science fiction crew, change the company word until you get Outfit, Contractors or Habitat Guard, then lock it.

    Questions and answers

What is a good name for a mercenary company?

Several historical companies had plain names: a color, a people or a habit. This tool follows that pattern with an emblem of the trade in the middle: Tarnished Ledger Free Company, Rust-Red Banner Hired Guard, Underpaid Jackdaw Outfit.

Does it make science fiction mercenary names?

Yes. One group of company words is science fiction: Outfit, Contractors, Squadron, Drop Team, Habitat Guard. Openers such as Outer Belt, Low Orbit and Ring Station set the name in space: Low Orbit Invoice Contractors.

Are these the names of real companies or units?

No. The lists are our own and name no modern firm, real unit or living person. No part, and no pair of neighboring parts, is a firm's name on Wikipedia's list of private military contractors, read 3 October 2026. For stories and games only.

No modern firm, real unit, living person or published setting is named, and no entry is a weapon. Checked by script the same day: no entry repeats an entry of another list on this site, the adventurer page included; and every entry and every pair of neighboring parts was compared with the names on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_private_military_contractors, and again on 2026-10-03: none is a firm's name there (Corps and Limited are everyday words that end two names on that list).
