Scoring key

A touchdown is worth 6
The ball is carried into, caught in or recovered in the other team's end zone.
A kicked extra point is worth 1
The try after a touchdown, kicked through the goal posts.
A two-point try is worth 2
The try after a touchdown, run or passed in the way a touchdown is scored.
A field goal is worth 3
A drop kick or place kick between the uprights, above the crossbar.
A safety is worth 2

How this list was compiled: The layout is our own work: a row for each kind of score with a box for how many a team made, each worth its points, and the final score worked out; and a second sheet for flag football with a box a half. Checked on 2026-10-09 against the English Wikipedia article American football, section Scoring (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football): a touchdown is worth six points and comes when a live ball is carried into, caught in or recovered in the other team's end zone; the try after it is worth one point when kicked through the goal posts (the extra point) and two points when scored the way a touchdown is (the two-point conversion); a field goal is worth three points, drop kicked or place kicked between the uprights and above the crossbar; a safety is worth two points, given to the defense when the ball carrier is tackled in his own end zone; the team with more points when the game ends wins. Checked the same day against the English Wikipedia article Flag football (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_football): a standard game is played in two halves whose length is set by the league; the sport has no dominant sanctioning organization, so its rules vary, among them tries worth 1, 2 or 3 points. For that reason the flag football sheet presets no point value: a half's points are typed as one number. The most a box takes is a guard against a slip of the finger and not a rule of the game. No league, team, maker or event is named. Licence: own work

How it works

This football score sheet works the score out of the scoring plays: count each team's touchdowns, extra points, two-point tries, field goals and safeties, and it does the sums. It prints blank for a clipboard.

Score a game

Type the team names under Away and Home. After a score, raise the count in that team's row: the touchdown first, then the extra point or the two-point try that followed it. A safety is counted for the team that made the tackle.

Questions and answers

How do you keep score in football?

Add 6 for a touchdown, 1 for an extra point kicked after it or 2 for a two-point try, 3 for a field goal and 2 for a safety. The higher total when the game ends wins.

Is there a flag football score sheet?

Yes: the Flag football sheet has a row for each half and one for overtime. Flag football has no single rule book and tries can be worth 1, 2 or 3, so add up a half by your league's values: one number a team.

How many points is a safety in football?

Two, and they go to the defense. It happens when a ball carrier is brought down inside his own end zone.

Is there a printable football score sheet PDF?

Yes. Print blank sheet prints the open sheet empty on one page of Letter or A4, with what each score is worth under it. For a PDF, choose Save as PDF in the print window.
